Huawei has the potential to become a mastodon in being in control of the entire vertical chain of software and hardware incl networking in a home country with over 1 bill patriots. Same as Apple.

Great move, as most google apps are banned in China, it is wise to have something completely new that fits the market.
Number of apps will not be a problem, as Chinese people cannot read English anyway, for sure the existing app developers will have something homebrew for the new device.
Can't wait.

Many phone makers come out own OS such as MIUI, Color OS, Yun OS etc. But they are all built on the top of Android. I don't think they can be called as OS.

...and it will go directly to the rubbish bin.
No-apps=useless OS.
Microsoft (WP), Samsung (Tizen) and now Huawei throw away billions on a black hole of stupidity. For the same reason Linux on Desktop was perpertually failing as a mainstream solutions those do as well.
On mainstream software there's space for only one OS (windows on Desktop, android on mobile). I say one because Apple is an outlier, people would buy whatever they do.
So as long as you're not the established OS or your name is not Apple better not throw those billions away. Google was lucky because she came first (again, I don't count apple because they live in their own world) and that's all about it, nothing more, nothing less.
If you want to create a new OS , create a new class of products first. The desktop and mobiles is/are taken. Dunno, maybe long lasting smartwatches, or VR?
