Nokia holds back S40 to make way for Maemo and Symbian

02 December, 2009
Today, at its annual Capital Markets Day event, Nokia revealed some details about it OS distribution strategies that we find particularly interesting. Apparently the company has finally realized two...

Those Symbian's bashers & haters will no doubt be sad to hear that Nokia is going to increase its Symbian porfolio at the expense of S40 starting next year. Is a right move to make it affordable to phone users. I have no complains about Symbian OS as there are so mature except the v.5 which needs more tweaking.

Dani, 03 Dec 2009Just get a iPhone people, it's the best phone in the world!... moreIs there such a thing called the "best phone in the the world." Nope, unfortunately there is no such thing as a "perfect phone" in this world. I have used a 3G & now using a 3GS. It has too many shortcomings. I am not going into details pertaining to its shortcoimgs.I presume you are using one as well & you should know better. The flaws just outnumbered the plus points of the iphone.
Having said that, I do admit that I like the UI, app store & surfing the net. Thats about it. Is more of an info tool than a phone. I am going to say this & always will: iphone as a phone it sucks!!!

i have used both s60 and s40 and i can say i prefer s60 but it is complex and buggy. I van't imagine most people i kmow using s60 ... But then again neither s40. Still i think it's a good move, technology is advancing now. Nokia brings smartphones to the masses, unlike windows mobile and android, which interests me.

What about S30? Isn't it the best selling Nokia'a series right now? Probably with the numbers at least comparable to S40. Will S30 phase out? Will it be possible to create 30$ S40 mobile in 2011+?

I only wish Nokia could understand that S40 still needs to exist.
All these platforms should be shared base on percentage of supposed users.
This will really move their Market...

I Still think Nokia is the best.

I dont understand y S40 needs to be phased out. This is one of the best platform i have seen for a low to mid range phone. They might reduce the no of S40 phones since they might be concentrating on high end phones. i am posting this message using a S40 phone...

This graph tells us nothing about the amount of phones released.
And for S40 lover out there, it does not tell us at what end they will cut down on S40. (for me, S40 does not feel at home in midrange phones). They might produce less low-end phones, to raise margins, so the midrange s40 portfolio might be as big next year as this year.

They talked about changes in S60, so S40 lovers might become S60 lovers next year... perhaps some scaling, to limit multi-tasking capabilities in mid and lower range s60 phones, to prevent from running out of memory and making the phone slow. Or they might just use the Arm 11 600Mhz used in 6270, and simplify user experience in S60.

Hope this graph tells us there will be more than one Maemo device next year. If nokia arent hiding something and will introduce an new OS, that will take chunks of the rest, but its not shown here, because they want to keep it a secret.

S40 is simple and reliable for low-mid range phones.
the only drawback is its limited capability.
Nokia should upgrade the S40 so it will at least support multi-tasking.

Anyway, Im glad S40 is getting pushed lower and I do hope it will not get extinct. I love S40 but I do need some more functions in S60 (and possibly MAEMO)

Only for the touch experience and creative( though somewhat ridiculous ) applications and uses. It is basically an iPod Touch wih some connectivity options. It is seriously too overrated.

if you look at the chart, that is still one big piece for the S40. It is unlikely Nokia is going to kill S40 completely. It is just going to be pushed to much more lower priced devices.

I do agree that S60 seem slower than S40 but at hardware technology advances (processors and such). It might catch up to the speed of S40.

iphone is the best you say? good for you that you like it. I'm a former iphone user and it did not work for my needs. not everyone needs a touchphone in general and can not send files on bluetooth is a major drawback for me.

Next year there will be a lot of very confused old people trying to use their phones wandering around.

Mate, some of them have trouble understanding "open it and talk, close it and hang up".

They usually dump a huge bag on the phone store counter and spend half an hour searching for the phone.

                                        Some real life examples:-

                                        1. "Do I push the green button and then put in the numbers"?

"listen madam, there's a right way and a wrong way and that is the wrong way"

                                        2. "My new phone doesn't switch on, it's been on the charger all night"

"Sometimes it helps if you put the battery in."

                                        3. "It doesn't switch on" (holding down the red key).

"The power switch is at the top,"
