Nokia tease with Symbian UI improvements coming in 2010

03 December, 2009
Yesterday Nokia announced their 2010 year plans for major renewal of the aging Symbian user interface and pushing the first Maemo 6 device. But the good news didn't end there, since the podcast published...

    you clearly making stuff up.

I develop C++ apps and almost the entire development library is identical to vista, apart from a few uac hooks.

A few of the kernels? There's only one kernel! Vista is much more closely related to 7 than to XP. The reason vista is sho bad it's because they changed so many components. Windows 7 is just a polished and finished vista, sort of what vista was meant to be.

I've been using windows 7 for almost a year. Just because it "feels" different doesn't mean it is different. Im talking from a developers point of view, not an end user point of view. If you don't believe me, read the development support papers, and stop making stuff up.

ive been carrying nokia since the first to the last phone, and i always had a small annoying problem with each,
But i am sure the new symbian will change that!
Maemo does have a good change, but the symbian looks amazing!

saw a lot of comments here asking if the 5800,n97,n97 mini and e72 will get this new os. i really doubt any of this phone will get the new upgrade os. there is one 1 thing for sure that nokia will still support all this phone couple of years from now!!!

i really hope nokia is cooking this new ui right.

(upgrading phone this coming april & im going to wait for nokia's new ui!!!! free phone ftw)

Watchout, 04 Dec 2009You just havent got the picture. The maemo OS is even more ... moreMaemo is based on Linux, it's open source that means you can do whatever you want with it including renaming it and installing it on another phone.

It's in the gpl you can compile it to run on better hardware which is what Samsung did with Symbian.

One of the shortcomings of Open source is that Maemo won't be any different to any other Linux based OS just like with desktop linux there are many variations they will all run mostly the same software.

Gentoo, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Mint, Ubuntu Debian are just some of them.

There will be nothing Nokia can do to stop other companies such as Samsung from using it.

does anyone have any idea if the Nokia N97 and/or the Nokia E72 will be able to take advantage of all these new features of the latest version of the Symbian operating system, and/or upgrade their Nokia cellphone's firmware to the latest version of the [Nokia] Symbian operating-system?

Wow! This sounds pretty good! I actually hated Symbian OS for its annoying and really boring, ugly and very very VERY outdated UI and is really over rated. Now, another thing Nokia should work on is their phone's designs.. I mean, most of their phones are really thick and freakishly heavy! But I'd still really choose it if I had to choose between this or Samsung because Samsung really has the ugliest and worst designs ever!! Right now, I still think Apple and SE's one of the best and beginning to kinda like Nokia aswell.

The iphone's OS was taken from... morehey mate, the one your saying looks good only paper, I believe your definitely talking about Nokia N97, right. And yeah, your right that apple hit the jackpot. Their OS was straight forward. But what won it was the capacitive technology of the display along the UI. Correct me if I am wrong but their was no mass market touch enabled phone with a capacitive technology before the iPhone. By the way the first AMO-LED was from Nokia in 8800 arte series and Samsung saw that and capitalized on it. And from where on earth did this person 'apple took from motto' get this information / idea / fact ... that the iPhone OS is taken from Motorola. iPhone OS was based on cocoa of Mac OS X. And Motorola used Linux or symbian and now Android.
                                  Cheers

Nokia is back with a bang! I just hope they do not share their wonderful User Interface (UI) with samsung and the likes. Because Nokia devoted itself to making symbian so powerful and capable, what it is today. And samsung just uses that effort of Nokia which is the reason I do not like samsung.
I read some comments stating that the new symbian would be similar to maemo, that is not correct. By the time the new symbian you see in these pictures gets in the market, a way better maemo 6 would be coming that would be more like a handheld computer.
Symbian 3 would just be improvements in the S60 5th edition at the moment (symbian 2). Symbian 4 would be the thing to look out for. And the currently maemo 5 is an excellent OS, so the reason Nokia decides to show us their plans for next year is the fact that Nokia was loosing its popularity as the top dog of the mobile industry. Now its clear that for high end users, Nokia has maemo 5(N900), s60 5th edition for the mid range touch screen market. Whereas s60 3rd edition for their high end non-touch phones, whereas s40 for mid range and s30 for low end.
I believe Nokia is on top of their game once again!
                                      Cheers

Why? as it took this long for Nokia to realise the Symbian software was getting shown up for ages,an not moved on to the next step, the iPhone as really shown not just Nokia but the others up,an moved mobiles on,but Nokia thought this would never happen but now losing ground,2009 as been bad for Nokia we have seen nothing really outstanding from them, even Samsung have shown Nokia they are more advanced than them
