The rise, dominance, and epic fall - a brief look at Nokia's history

12 August, 2015
A couple of years ago, Microsoft reached a deal to acquire Nokia's struggling devices and services business, and just recently, the Finnish company sold its HERE mapping unit to a group of German car-makers. It’s true that Nokia has had a terrible last five years, but this doesn’t take away the fact that it was this very company that effectively defined the mobile industry for over a decade prior, and gave us some of the most memorable phones.

Proud Nokia(E63) user here since 2010, still Up and Running, Never replaced the battery(3days-light to moderate use). Still works as if its new. The only problem that i've got is software/app support. i just hope they'll come back soon with a monster(revenge) phone.

No love for the original 5110, of which without there wouldn't have been a 6110!

Well this article is nice but fails to address where Nokia truly failed.... The user interface starting in 2007.

Symbian was (is) a true multitask OS ahead of anything out in the smartphones market (except Windows CE, latter windows phone) but with the rise of touch interface Nokia instead of investing on R&D to compete with Google and Apple keep insisting (for years and years almost until the MS deal) in releasing shameful, unrefined and unappealing S60 touch versions.... oh and crappy resistive touch screens that almost required a stylus or something for the user to be able to use them correctly.
Plus a online software and content store that was clunky and looked like a beta version of what iTunes already was offering...

They had the OS and the hardware to be relevant but user interface was (and is) a huge factor for the consumer and Nokia learn that the hard way...

Also this article fail to mention N95 flagship (1st Nokia to have a SoC with a GPU) and the previous flagship N93 that was convertible to a full digital camera and the 1st phone camera with a whopping 41 Mpixels and still a top of the line today (the camera not the Pureview phone).

Go back to MSDN and cry about Windows Phone having 1% market share. Hi,
A nicely done article, however there is no mention of the Meego software that was short lived under Nokia. it is a shame though cause I believe Meego (currently sailfish under Jola) had what it takes to compete with Apple & Android but thanks to Elop's strategy it was shot down...

I always depended on Nokia and almost all the phones I had were Nokia phones
Here is a list of what I had
Nokia 1800:My first Nokia phone I had until I had lost it
Nokia N70 Music Edition:This was after my Samsung was broken, it was the best I had the only downside was the WAP but this was water damaged
Asha 302 Vodafone: This was my best phone ever in the world, able to load Google with no problems.
Nokia 106:(no information to post, too boring)
Nokia 1661-2 (US):This was my most recent phone, but it was boring. However it did have quirky ringtones

Nokia has been the best ever for me and my family. Started with Nokia 5110 which was the strongest phone ever and now using Nokia Asha. Unfortunately touch screens took over as Microsoft expanded.
We keep looking for the Nokia E71 which is the best phone in the world for us.
