The rise, dominance, and epic fall - a brief look at Nokia's history

12 August, 2015
A couple of years ago, Microsoft reached a deal to acquire Nokia's struggling devices and services business, and just recently, the Finnish company sold its HERE mapping unit to a group of German car-makers. It’s true that Nokia has had a terrible last five years, but this doesn’t take away the fact that it was this very company that effectively defined the mobile industry for over a decade prior, and gave us some of the most memorable phones.

My cousin has a Nokia 515 .It cost him nearly INR 9000/-Battery just last for 2 days.Display is very poor. The phone hangs and lags often.Poor camera. The 3g connection in this phone is of no use with its poor display, small screen and hanging problems. The only thing is that it has aluminum back cover and scratch resistant glass. Aactually this phone doesn't worth more than INR 3000/- even at the time of its launch.

That is why it is iOS vs the REST. and not iOS vs a particular android brand. Given time Android will either have to go through extreme changes. Or die. MAYBE the Alphabet bs would free up more resources into Android R & D. but even so, it could be too late ;) the world will still use it though, and it might even still have the majority market share of users. the only reason for this is that the world is unfortunatly confined to what they can afford.

I still have a 6 year old nokia up and running fine (which I use when the jazzy smart phone dies)... while my wife has changed/swapped/got repaired several iphones. Just saying. RIP Nokia... hope you make a comeback.

Well, we all know now why elop was there anyway. Has made so many bad decisions is absolutly imposible to be so dung and think NOKIA Went down only cause of it:s devices not selling. There was a huge interess in their devices not to sell. I remember when i was looking for devices in stores and all the sellers tried to convince me how bad Nokia is and how good samsung or crapple is. Now, i'm thinking who paid this bullys? They didn't convinced me cause well, i have some caracter and know what i want. But, the mass? That's another story...

AnonD-129208, 16 Aug 2015If Nokia is really returning to win in the smartphone indus... moreYeah, well i think if they come back they should not aim those customers, cause in general this "customers" you're talking about know pretty much nothing about hardware, it's functions and why. A real call quality and reliable devices. So, NOKIA should definetly aim the small more inteligent class that does not buy a phone cause their monkey has one;).

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2015I respectfully disagree now, as I disagreed then. Windows P... moreMan this comment is the proof of how ignorants americans can get. I'm not talking about you but about the people asking is Nokia still on the market? This is as ignorant it can get.

They thought they could take Android head-on. It was as simple as embracing Android and channeling fewer resources to R&D. Unfortunately they did spend billions in Meego and Symbian development to include touch.

Samsung abandoned Bada and jumped that bandwagon that is Android. It was a strategy that made the Koreans overtake the Finnish.

Personally, I had a Samsung D600 and always wished to own a Nokia as my next upgrade. After using a friend's Ideos and seeing the loads of applications available in the Android ecosystem, I made the jump to a Galaxy mini and the rest is history.

Nokia still has the chance of bouncing back, if only they can maintain the great hardware in their next devices and incorporate Android fully.

Please bring back the old school phones (eg. 8310, 8250 etc..) but this time with sd memory card supported for musics.. even if it's not a colored phone. For long battery usage and it's life-span. Just in case you are resuming your innovations to be on the line of samsung, sony and apple, make your own OS disregard the adroids and windows... make it competitive with iOS. Go for Symbian OS..! We are waiting for your big come back NOKIA!

                                  Some people talk about batterylife.
Old phones could not beat the best of today, in terms of talktime, surf, gaming, video.
Some might beat in terms of standy, as many phones today have pretty bad standby performance. Sony, has a good stamina mode, that gives you good standby as well (and it can be configured so it doesnt interfere with on-screen activities, but mobile data and wifi will be off when the screen is off), and Samsung has its ultra power savings mode, that gives you much of the limited functionality you used to live with in those devices that you seem to think had better batterylife.

I sure could snake the battery out of my 3210. Talking was too expensive. But even with a basic game like that, I could go through more than one charge per day.

Some of the devices that we used to live with, that had better batterylife was more compact in all dimensions except for thickness. Some of them might even had a over all lower volume (sizewise), but that difference would be much less than the other meassurements might suggest. Perhaps you got a bit better batterlife per cubic centimeter back in the days, but mostly it's just an illusion, due to different usage patterns.

its the android that destroyed nokia and made samsung great!
if nokia had adopted to android os instead of being stubborn and sticking to their shitty symbian they would still be ruling the world market and on the other hand samsung from making silly feature phones like champ, metro, hero etc has become a world leader in android phones industry due to android!
