The rise, dominance, and epic fall - a brief look at Nokia's history

12 August, 2015
A couple of years ago, Microsoft reached a deal to acquire Nokia's struggling devices and services business, and just recently, the Finnish company sold its HERE mapping unit to a group of German car-makers. It’s true that Nokia has had a terrible last five years, but this doesn’t take away the fact that it was this very company that effectively defined the mobile industry for over a decade prior, and gave us some of the most memorable phones.

I worked with Nokia as one of their distributors and being a ODM partner as well back in the heydays. The problem was that the people working in Nokia back then were too self absorbed, thinking that there will never be competition. The individual business units were burning excessively with a lot of personal agendas. The weapon that killed Nokia was simply just complacency.

AnonD-179722, 16 Aug 2015If only Nokia aware that current market is starting to get ... more@ Batam King, You are so right. I never liked touchscreen phones from the beginning and that's why I never bought one. I still remain a fan of the classic phones. Nokia was at its' absolute glory with the phones Nokia 6230, 6230i, 6233, 6270, 6280, 6600, 7610, 6670, 6630, 6680, N70, N90, N93, N80, N73, N82 etc. I wish too that Nokia releases those good old Symbian models in high end specs as well as the Series 40 in high specs again. :) :)

If Nokia started as a papermill, how does them selling this devices division equate to demise. Also, I don't believe they SOLD Microsoft mapping or patents. Last I saw , they were about to sell the mapping to European car manufacturers. They only allowed Microsoft the use of certain patents for a period of time. Your headline is rather dramatic, but you might want to do a little research prior to posting such articles.

Dont get too nostalgic. The people within Nokia that brought us the devices we used to like, are probably no longer with the company.

My tip for Nokia, if they want a quick return to the market. Partner with Xiaomi. Xiamo, if I've understtod correctly can keep very low prices, since they don't have to pay licenses for patents. But if they want to get on the global market, they would have to, and that would bring prices up. Nokia on the other hand, when they get back to making mobiles, owns a lot of patents, that will give them cross-patent licensing deal, which mean, they don't have to pay or at least not that much for use of other companies patents.

If Nokia then wants to repackage the devices with another look, and or build quality, that is up to Nokia. But I don't think they have to. Right now, it's more about getting the brand spread again.

in pakistan we are deprived of good quality phones. presently china based companies like qmobile, voice , rive etc are providind v poor quality handsets in lower prices. when there was nokia they provide excellent hardware quality. samsung is present but v costly according to market. huawei is providing descent phones. oppo also provides v nice quality phones. but we still miss the stone hard build quality of nokia

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2015I respectfully disagree now, as I disagreed then. Windows P... moreWell the problem was that Symbian was a dead end at the time.
Nokia had wasted a lot of money already, trying to keep Symbian on lifesupport.
Most of what WP was missing at the time, iOS was missing as well.

MS came with what seemed like a good deal.
They would take care of most hardware drives. Meaning that Nokia could fire more people.
                          MS would also do marketing.
MS would also attract developers. Symbian didn't have that many.
And foremost MS would pay Nokia money for each handset.

MS didn't deliver on all points.

Symbian should have been killed of already, and the focus should have been completely on Maemo/MeeGo. Or perhaps on android. But at the time, the race didnt seem lost, so there was every chance for another OS to grab parts of the market.
Symbian could have still been out there, but money should have no longer been spent on it's development.

The decision to kill symbian came way too late. And that forced Nokia to desperate moves. And at the time the deal with MS, seemed like the best thing they could do.

What people also seem to forget all the time, is what the Nokia brand was worth or not worth at the time.
Nokia had been in trouble for some years. With devices that didn't deliver.
People were taling about Apple, Samsung, even HTC and some other brands. Next to no one was talking about Nokia at the time.
With a brand name that wasn't stronger, going Android route would not have been that easy. With other brands around that were more trendy, and with Nokia having a bit of a bad reputation. It's not as easy as people would have picked the Nokia device over others. They simply wouldnt have. Nokia would have had to do a lot of marketing. Which they never were particulary good at. And they would have had to deliver devices at the right price, which Nokia had not been doing for a few years except for in the very low end of feature phones.
My best bet is that if Nokia had went down the android route, they would have been gone by now, anyhow. And they wouldn't have gotten the cash from MS. Sure, there would have perhaps just as now been a company called Nokia, that owned most of the patents, and some services. Or perhaps without the cash flow from MS, all of that would have had to be sold off, as well, and now in the hands of MS, google or Apple.

in 2004 Nokia released the 7710. It was a touchscreen based phone. So what you mean by 5800 being their first full touch device, I dont know.

The deal with MS did not include patents. Licensing to them, but not the patents themselves. And not the mapping services either.
