I have used my z1 compact twice or thrice for underwater filming and everytime afer taking out its speaker sounds quite low and there is a mist gets deposited on camera lens from inside but eventually dries out.
and sony Please stop calling your phones DUST PROOF. Recently on my trip to a desert land, while filming on sand dunes i could see the dust particles (one or two) inside the camera lens and it was quite shocking as my other friends with NON-DUST PROOF phones didnt face this problem.

Wow this is pretty disappointing. I own a Xperia Z3 and I submerged my phone plenty of times, I've even filmed underwater and took pictures on hard rains... And guess what? It's still alive. It never failed but now reading this.. I don't know if I will use my phone to take pictures in the pool this year.

Bottom half of the screen wouldn't register touch after dropping it 5CM! onto the ground. Took it to the local Telstra store that I bought it from, they took one look at it and said "half the screen not working?"
Absolutely terrible build quality.

owned a sony z3 ... dropped it for half a meter on my foot and not on the ground with a screen protector on the screen .. the result is a broken screen where half of the touch input stopped working . the camera became blurred and the phone signal became unstable . although i was a sony fan but never again ... crappy phones

I've had the Z, Z1 and Z2, placed them all under water (pool and tap water), taking videos too. Once they made the dedicated camera button I took photos with the Z1 & Z2. None of them have water damage. I see Sony is protecting themselves but that doesn't mean the phone is necessarily going to die all of a sudden because of a policy change, just proceed with caution.

Till now i was a dedicated sony user... but i guess now its time to change... they should have done their experiments before hand and not now..

DO NOT use your Sony ''waterproof'' device in wet conditions, especially submerged. Bought a Z3 a few weeks back (while I upgraded from the Z2), went to the pool on my holiday for a few underwater shots, and after 5 minutes or so of being underwater the phone JUST DIED. It's a shame they advertise these phones as waterproof and now they're trying not to take the blame, I bought this phone especially for it's waterproofnes and shatter resistance, which it seems none of them it's true. Never buying a Sony again unless I'll get it for pennies, which won't be an issue as they're sales will drop again and the phones will worth nothing after a few months of their release. Will order myself a Motorola Droid Turbo, at least it says ''splash proof'' and it's seriously toughened to be resistant to accidental drops.

I am referring to "the readers" in generic terms. You are trying to make it specific, i.e., me only. I am not cleaning my hands off. But asking Sony to do so. And if you read properly, my attack is towards Sony ( not towards you), your comment is like a platform on which the attack can be easily carried out.
For your information I did read the manual. That is why I was able to quote this line -"should be used in fresh water (non-saline)"- from the manual. There was no mentioning of chlorinated water in the manual at all. Even then, basis the advertisement shown by Sony, I wanted to test my phone's waterproofing capabilities, and it failed miserably.
"That is the Normal now in marketing strategies." My question is why so? Don't you think it's unethical!!

Just get rid of the waterproof tag and add the splash proof tag instead, Sony. What fun is a waterproof phone if you can't click pictures underwater?

By this I mean if companies are writing "Waterproof" in big letters as a feature, then they should also write the "Limitations" in big bold letters. Why write it in ** section and in small prints? The answer is obvious. The thinking is let the customer miss reading it and we will be able to take advantage of the situation.
This situation is an unethical practice or malpractice in trade. Unfortunately, it is a non-written norm of any industry.
I am not accusing you in any way. Why are you taking it so negatively? Your comment is the easiest to counter attack, basis which I can convey Sony's fundamental thinking to the mass on the internet.

No issues after using for about a year. Nothing wrong with the camera or display other than a line down my screen (not a crack, dead pixels) because i dropped my phone

well these rules are stupid...how they are going to validate if u were under the rain or if u were under a pool or taking a shower come on ..it is water thats it.. ur phone will be damage and they will say that for what ever reason u are not elegible for an exchange or refund..so please say that it is splash proof insted of water proof.

At least Sony admits the problem with IP certificated phones, and suggests not to submerge the phones underwater.
i'm from Iran. after using my S5 mini for 6 months and occasionally using it underwater in my swimming pool, one day it's vibrator broke, so i went to the guarantee and got it fixed, and asked them if it's still waterproof or not, and they said YES IT IS.
after a week, i went to my swimming pool again, and ..... it's touch keys broke and the screen started to flicker. then the whole display stopped working at all.
i went to the guarantee again and they said it will cost you about 1,100,000 RLS ( =330 USD) and said your guarantee does not cover it, because of WATER DAMAGE. (brand new galaxy s5 mini will cost around 290 USD in Iran)
i started talking to them about their mistake and no one accepted. so i dumped my broken S5 mini in the trash and i'll never buy another Samsung again just because of it's damn guarantee.
