Sony phone probably are still water proof. You probably still can use the camera underwater and such. The new policy im guessing is a way to protect themselves from people who abuse water proofing, submerging thier phones in oil, juice, etc.
Wear and tear may damage the water proof-ing so i think thats the reason sony advises us not to submerge the phone. It should be fine if the phone is new, it should not have any issues. I own 6 phones currently and have been using all 4 phones, Z1-Z3+. Have been rather rough with them, no screen protectors or covers since day 1 ( I dont like the feel of them). I have to say i have no issues with the water proof-ing having submerged my phone in boiling soup before.
Point is, the Z5's quality should stay the same if not better and theres nothing to worry about if you're not an idiot with your device.

While advertising their phone, Sony was very keen in showing its smartphone's waterproof capabilities. And now it is telling us to enjoy their advertisements and to buy their expensive smartphones but not to expect to do things it was supposed to do as shown in their advertisement. Actually I am now losing confidence regarding this waterproof things, its not only Sony but My S5 also get partially ruined when it was accidentally dropped in orange juice. The screen is showing some weird partition and occasionally some black line randomly appears. However my Asus Padfone S is proving its water resistant capabilities while it is only rated as IP X2 and not higher IP reading like S5 and Xperias. It got dropped in shallow drain during heavy rain and nothing happened to it at all.

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2015I think you are the only one who got aggitated in reading m... moreYou are giving your view points, in Sony's defence, as per what you have felt or experienced. You are disregarding certain factors like false marketing, etc. which others, holding different models and units, may have encountered.

These other factors have been proven on number of occasions. Therefore, "the Rule of a thumb in Accounting" does not apply.

When I compare my friend's situation with mine, there's only one thing that plays in my mind, " It is water resistant, if I am lucky". Whereas it should be water resistant, in all conditions for a long time, after adhering to a small number of restrictions repeatedly, written in big and bold letters (and not fine small prints). To make things clear, from a consumer's point of view, a company should make an accurate forecast of the wear and tear of any of the features (especially physical ones) it introduces in a smartphone and announce the same without any contradiction thereafter, till the life span of the phone ends, i.e., discontinued. This task can be processed through machines to make it as accurate as possible. Instead of bringing out new phones every 6 months, bring them out every year.

If a company gets too many complaints regarding phones being defective, isn't it obvious to process a mass recall and then provide new phones to the affected users? If a company does not do this, the message is loud and clear - the company is only there to take maximum profits by providing minimum service quality (Minimum service quality means maximum users are adversely affected). Also the number of defective products should be minimum, but in case of Sony, it is maximum. In this situation three things can happen - (a) high number of defective phones are being manufactured and are being sold in the market intentionally or (b) false advertising or (c) both. So, in such a case, the objective of standardising of products is completely being defeated, and hence a legal issue internationally. Mobile warranty does not cover all damages. For that reason, there is something else known as accidental damage insurance, which is another form of cheating consumers. I know what insurance is, as I have worked for an insurance company previously.

that's the way of sony saying "it's waterproof, but if you damage it with water don't expect us to repay you, deal with it"
But on the other hand if any of you submerge an electronic device underwater, you deserve to get it ruined. It's a 700e smartphone we are talking about, not a toy! Always treat you expensive devices with care.
I can't believe with some comments of yours people.. it's not a toy neither something to show off. seriously.

I got trouble with my xperiaz3 after showing a demonstration of waterproof in front of my family and friends....now its front camera/ear censor/vibration/are not working.. and over heating...
                really Sony cheats its customers...

I actually don't care that much. I don't do lots of pictures and when I'm in water, I don't have my phone. But I have been thrown fully clothed into the pool before.
My main focus on Sony's line is the "compact" (against the "mini"s). My Z1C was bought on 1st availability and is the 1st android I kept for over 1 year and 6 months and know I'm thinking about Z5C. Again, internals and size are my objectives. Granted, the users of larger phones (where there are more high-end choices) may have other objectives.

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2015(1) I am NOT angry at you for being a loyal Sony fan boy. I... moreI think you are the only one who got aggitated in reading my comment. Is it because I defended Sony at some point you got "aggitated" then? So you mean it is fine for you to read comments with bad words and cursing towards Sony because you got a defective phone? I never even curse or say bad words against anyone but a lot of comments do have against Sony and here you are accusing me of wrong things instead of them. So that does mean you only want to see something negative in this thread? Put some sense in there, mister.

Tell me a reputable mobile company without support. It just mean that there is always a possibility of defective phone no matter how they standerdize it. Is mobile warranty made for nothing? Ofcourse not.

See? You have a friend with a good phone but you chose to justify the negative side.

Have you read my first comment? I'm asking the person who post something negative if he have a sony phone for him to say that. Maybe he is just some basher who is out of the blue? Have you read his comment? Did you not read it or notice it for once?

The next time you comment on something, make sure you are on the right track. Read before you react. And again, do not accuse me because I did not state it. Whatever country you are in, you will lose your battle. Just like the Rule of a thumb in Accounting: DO NOT ASSUME UNLESS STATED.

Assuming is not good, it leads you to nowhere. Now. Where is your warranty and why did you not use it?Anyway, just buy another brand... Samsung, Iphone, LG and etc. Easy as that.

P.S. Sony is not the only company that had a case against a consumer. Since you are a good researcher, You know that already, right? ...And I'm not a Sony "fan". I just commented what I have experienced using it. Really? Why do you assume to much?

                    Enjoy your day! :)

Disappointing that Sony has to downgrade their waterproof policy. Sony has to remember that the Earth is 3/4th water and majority of it is not distilled, pure drinking water. In fact most of it is in the salted kind.

Instead of revising their policy, Sony should strengthen their waterproofing. It doesn't have to go deeper than 1.5m but at least it should be able to withstand nearly all types of water that the human body can also resist.

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2015I said it in a nice and positive way. You should have just ... more(1) I am NOT angry at you for being a loyal Sony fan boy. I am disgusted with Sony and other manufacturers who give hopes in "big and bold letters and/or videos" and then retract or contradict those hopes by using fine small prints, which is commonly known as "Terms and conditions apply", by providing too many restrictions. If Sony advertises something, it should work after adhering to all mentioned restrictions. Also restriction should not be more in quantity ( by the term "Restrictions", I mean 1 or 2 of them, not 10 such restrictions). Too many restrictions lead to the reduction of the urge to try those features and thereby renders the advertisement meant for promoting those features useless. It is as good as not advertising them.

                          (2) The way you use words to convey or express your interpretation is the reason why readers who read your comments feel agitated. To this, you may say, "Don't read my comments then." This is the same logic I am applying in Point number (1) above.

                          (3) My friend uses an Xperia ZR. He has no problems with the water resistance feature. What I mean is a brand like Sony is expected to standardise products and/or services legally throughout the world. If I face a problem with the water resistance feature and you don't, how is it, in anyway, a standardised product?

You should have just commented on someone who uses that word. There's a lot in this thread and it's easily seen. Don't get angry, it's your fault for accusing me of using those words and worst is "quoting" it as if I really said those. I can bring you to court anytime and sure, I'll win. Anyhow, don't get angry with me for that "soft bricked phone" you have. It's not my fault you have the defective one and I was given a durable one.

It makes me question, don't you have any warranty or your warranty have passed? For your peace of mind, everyone in our family uses Sony, then a friend of mine tried it but got the last stock (The one displayed on the shop BUT is sealed). She was so excited and tried it underwater, and lo and behold it died. As in died for no good. We bring it back for replacement. Since we bought it in Sony Shop, we have NTC (That's important in our country for mobile warranty. That's our government support in mobile telecom). To make the story short, She was given a new one, not a refurbished one, after less than 5 days. Viola, it was durable this time. She's even been dropping it few times already but still working. (Yes, she is that clumsy) -It was z3 compact

Reading feedbacks on other forum about Sony support makes me wonder why some have an unsupportive one. Really? They make you pay even with warranty? Why is that? Are you sure that Sony will have the money your giving them for repair or just those technician. Our Sony support are located in Malls. Yes Malls. They even support other mobile brand like what my brother have (It was a cheap local brand) and repair it for free under warranty. BUT the one in FAR AWAY Provinces and not in the City Malls will ask you to pay SO MUCH! So Sony Support in our country would ask us to report those kind of tech. Because really, you are only asked to pay if warranty have passed.

I come in peace. I hope you don't accuse me of anything like that again. I am not a rude commentor but you chose to address it to me as if i said it. Next time, be careful.

Is there much of a point in having the IP68 rating? I've personally used phones in the rain and when I've had wet hands and water has never found its way into the phone from my experience. It looks as though Sony has limited their phones to the same type of use, which I think everyone already done.

That's a great answer nokia already did that protection on 6220c
                                        How?
That's easy there was a silicon lines between device motherboard and case to protect %90 motherboard against to water damage.

I thing that can be used also for battery and whole motherboard.
