Andrpoid and Samsung is way more advanced than Apple, having pioneered finger print sensor on smart phones way before Apple, as well as being able to manufacture everything in house in case of Samsung. Apple is still just a re-packager, totally dependent on Android manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Sharp, Sony, Foxconn for all it's parts and final assembly. Android beats Apple by a mile!!

Again, $10 billion, and this is just for a single generation's display technology. Other display manufacturers like LG and Japan Display have spent near equal amounts on their technology.

You think Apple with their puny $2 billion R&D budget could have designed every component on their phone if just one component cost $10 billion in R&D?

Time to smell the coffee. Apple is just a repackager.

It's outright ridiculous to say Apple can even make their own technology with a R&D budget that small.

Samsung spends $40 billion in R&D in some years. Intel and IBM also spend close to Samsung's amount.

Hire a bunch of expensive programmers, build large buildings to house these expensive programmers, and there's your 2 billion already.
And this is just software. You haven't spent a single cent toward any hardware technology development, manufacturing or breakthroughs (which Apple isn't exactly famous for). With Apple's humongous profit, they should be spending more like $20 billion instead of measly $2 billion for R&D. Possibly that's why they are falling behind?

Then what how they ... moreSorry, so called "manufacturing" in high tech industry is more like 90% of the battle to building a an advanced smart phone. Apple can order anything they want from Chinese manufacturers, but if they don't have technology, Apple will not get it. For example, Apple can order curved Amoled screen, but only place they can get it is from Samsung. So they will not have curved amoled screen on iphone. Simple. If some OEM wanted to build an iphone in China today without permission of Apple, it's dead simple. All the tech used by Apple in iphone is already out there, ready for ordering. Mediocre LCD screen , 2GB ram, force touch screen, metal body housing etc etc, all used in iphone, and readily available from multiple Chinese manufacturers. There is nothing special about tech that goes in an iphone. Apple is getting further and further behind the curve in actual tech that goes in a smart phone.

The only thing Apple doesn't have is in house manufacturing. I think you meant to say that Apple don't produce any raw hardware themselves. They sell too many iDevices to do this.

In any case, indeed, Apple do acquire companies and use their tech, but that's how it works in the business world. Surely they didn't point a gun to their heads but instead offered a healthy sum of money to buy those companies, to which they agree to sell.

If Apple really did design everything, then the iPhone would cost thousands to build.
