Anonymous, 24 Feb 2010:D i'm buy winmo standar 6.1 device & very dissapointme... moreI am too WinMo user - from about 1 year with HTC-HD
My experience shows me similar results:
1. WinMo is dead now, more and more developers for this OS switch to android or iphone. It was not the same situation at the begining of 2009 - then android had only one model G1 but they made awesome improvement for just one year
2. Hardware vendors that before produced WinMo deveices like HTC, SonyEricson, Samsung, LG now are releasing their top-class devices with android.
3. Win7 will be born dead - I wonder if any hardware vendor will produce devices with this OS, maybe only Microsoft itself will produce phones with Win7
4. Samsung took another path - after experimenting with several OS-es they created a new OS - BADA (in S8500 device). It looks promising for now. I wonder if the S8000 phone is using the first prototype version of this OS. S8000 is also great device with lots of preloaded programs, but it is stated as non-OS device (For sure it has some OS for all of these programs but the OS is closed not accessible for developers)
But until I buy my next phone I will use the WinMo on my HTC HD.
And for WinMo, there are several java vendors:
IBM j9, Esmertec Jbed, Tao Intent, Mysaifu, SuperWaba, - see this lists:
http://weblogs.java.net/blog/2008/04/22/alive-and-kickin-java-windows-mobile
http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/~fittond/ppcjava.html
http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/blogs/3/644
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1611150&postcount=4
I personally prefer the IBM j9 Foundation which is not so limited like J2ME.
Java developers for business apps (not games) should look also at the mobile OSGi

So your father didn't get N73 bcoz it runs on the almighty OS, rather he just wanted a phone so he can talk and SMS and stuff.

Anonymous, 24 Feb 2010i bought the 6600, 6670, N73 only because they where able t... moreI don't doubt / deny the fact there are S60 users who utilize the "smart" functions. At the same time, I don't think you want to deny the fact a good % of these 6-series "smartphone" users have never downloaded a single app on their phones.
Quite often when I walk in to a phone shop, when a customer is having absolutely no idea what phone/model to get, I would hear the salesperson would (subjectively, as no other brands were mentioned) introduce some kind of mid-range S60 phones. These customers maybe (no offense) ladies, men over 50+ years old. The previous network service provider gave my father-in-law a free 6-series phone which I'm sure he didn't download a single app on his phone.
Then the almighty brand claim "we have x% of the smartphone market"....when practically a good number (if not most) of these so called "smartphone users" have never utilized any smart functions on these phones.
Same goes for the PSP issue. For serious gamers, they can't survive without PSP. But PSP is simply too bulky for many, especially office ladies and those in suit and tie. Chances are a slim iphone that fits in the pockets / purse would do the job.

even if the apps where mostly useless but i spent all day just browsing forums for apps
the N95 started the whole insane burst of tech all in one, the N73's novaltiy was its LCD being 2.4 back than and 3.2 mp cam
the N80 beat the N73 despite being older with wifi and higher res screen
i remember those days, they where great, N80, N73 have good memories
than came the N95, the ultimte phone and the last of greatest phone ever made
the iphone is boring, theres probably 10 apps that will be usefull to a regular user and the rest are junk like all those symbian apps i used to fill my phones with
general iphone users just use the ipod and make calls, installing apps jusr for the fun of it not for acutal purpose of use
as for gaming, yes its better than winmo and symbian but the iphone costs so much the PSP is way better.
I kept my PSP and old Nokia
gonna buy a Android now

Original_Jamaican, 23 Feb 2010To DASH:
Nokia have budget phones just like any other ma... moreMy observation is, yes the almighty brand puts its "smart OS" on every phones (except 1 and 2 seires), yet not "all" of these phones users use the "smart" functions of the phones.
In the N73/N76 days, most users only looked for a phone with a better cam, or like flip phone design (except the almighty brand didn't seem to know how to make a good one), but I seldom, if ever, heard anyone install any program on these phones. Same goes to most of the 6-series users, and a colleague of mine is using certain E-series...and the only reason she got such "smart" phoneis due to the qwerty keypad so she can type faster. (she cares little or less if the OS is Symbian or not)
On the contrary, I haven't seen any iphone / HTC owner who bought the phones and only make / receive calls / SMS. Most if not all have used the "smart" functions by downloading / installing programs from time to time.
