For those of you with overheated battery issue on the Lumia 950, these guys may help.
Solved my issue. They mention it may have something to do with the recovery partition.

Suffered incredible heat and drain on my 950, email problems (indefinitely attempting to download email, occasional error messages...). All gone since the last update. I almost returned the phone, now it's at only 50% at the end of an average day. Phew!

I find these battery life figures for the 950 very hard to believe. For example, today, with the battery fully charged at 9am and very little use, the battery was down to 10% by 5pm the same day even after ensuring that any app that could use the battery was switched off.

I have the 1520 and the battery was acceptable; "upgraded(!)" to win 10,and would get red hot and drain faster than i could charge. The 950 xl was charged overnight and after 3 hours was red hot and down to 20%. if I can't get it running properly, it'll have to go back :/

Used my 950 for taking a couple of pics, 2 minutes of video and its down to 68%. I have switched of background usage for what apps I can but Microsoft have removed that option for the Edge browser which has been identified as a potential culprit.

Hi, i found that my lumia 950 xl is a bit draining too fast! i open 3G and Localisation.
I tested by leaving it standby all night, but the battery also drains so much. I always check the battery lifetime as soon as I plug off the adapter, and it used to 20 hours. Now it shows 18 hours from 100% of battery instead. I don't know what happens to it. I think the phone should last more than 2 days. But it's not! Can you help me deal with this problem, or I have to return the phone to Microsoft and get new one?

The phone battery is working better than ever before. I took it off after 100% charge 8.5hours ago and now with intermittent charging thru the wireless charging plate (maybe 15-30 minutes in total) with moderate usage I am at 87%. Before the reset the wireless charge was slowing down the depletion of the battery. Recommend resetting to all who are having this problem.

Having the same issue. I cant even charge it fast enough as it drains the battery almost as fast as it charges. Am trying to reset the phone to see if that helps...

Re my post below, i just got an update 10586.164 on 2 April 2016. Looks like this update has fixed battery depletion issue in standby. Phone has been on for 12 hours with a couple if calls and push email to three accounts. Battery at 88%. Relieved and impressed

Yep- long time user of Lumias. Battery life on 950XL is a shocker. I have turned off all background apps except email. Battery use analysis suggests that 78% of use is going to display, yet the display hasn't been on. Handset is hot despite not being on and all apps closed. Reboot helps for a short time. I think maybe something in the OS is over dedicating standby power to the screen

I am experiencing same issues with battery for this phone. Last Nokia Lumia was 3 day battery life. Now i don't even get 8 hours on standby. As it is a USB3 charger no-one has one so i have to carry it with me.. extremely frustrating. Why is this not a standard size charger connection and what is going on with Battery life. I am very dissapointed with this phone the whole way round with about 12 user features. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I've had the 950xl from the day of release. And had no battery issues until the last update.the phone will use full battery in just under 5 hours standby. Omg. Also it gets very hot. I had no problems before this . Battery was ok .it would last all day with average usage. Build no 10.0.10586.164

Purchased Lumia 950XL for 3 weeks ago from Microsoft Store. Noticed battery getting hot, having trouble charging in vehicle and plug, full charge drains before noon, did not expect this kind of performance. Last phone, Nokia 1520 had great battery life. Looks like battery may be defective or draining too fast due to OS.

Battery life in Lumia 950 XL is the worst I've EVER had.
I leave home at 7.30 am with battery 100% and at 13.00 it's ONLY 17%.
I do not use phone (at work) but the drain is even up to 12% an hour! Why???

I took to the agent who restored the software. Now it is not heating even after the last update I done today. I noticed the phone consuming too much battery when it is used. Similar to what you noticed. I turned all applications in the back ground off.also I off all application locations except Cortana.

Dealing with severe power drain on 950 lately. Had significant power drain when I first got it in December, turned off Hello and a couple other power hogs. I was reasonably happy until it turned way south on its own over the weekend. Only two months in & either the battery is defective or the OS is killing the battery life. I have turned off all sorts of background apps & it is still very poor. I am very disappointed.

Me too facing battery drain issues in the new lumia 950 xl dual . also many times I have noticed that the phone is getting heated up in such way that I can't even keep it in my pocket!!
