The Nokia Ovi Stores hits 1.6 million downloads per day

14 April, 2010
Only a month ago around 1.5 million apps were downloaded from the Ovi Store each day and now the down- loads per day reach 1.6 million. That sure sounds impressive. But the App Store could only laugh at...

Nokia in Brazil is ridiculous . No useful app . Cant compare with Apple Store anywhere in the world.
And I believe things is going to get uglier as the new Symbian^3 is totally a new plataform.
Why developers would do something for a system that is too complicated with the evil signature process ?
Why should a write a single line for 5th Edition Symbian^1 if this has a date to die ?
Nokia MUST ASAP make Symbian plataform a paradise for developers or Iphone and Android will continue to humiliate Ovi Store .

I hope the ovi store has improved since the last time I tried it. The app store was a refreshing change, with plenty of Free apps. Awful user experience. Better off finding the dev pages and risking your phone getting bricked, lol.

Yes, how is androids store doing?

what others have said about getting apps from places other than ovi store is true, google maps and opera to take but two examples are available for symbian handsets, along with plenty of software is available from the suppliers directly and not just on the ovi store (benefits of the non draconian measures that iphone users have to put up with!)

It certainly doesn't help Nokia that the Ovi store doesn't work on some of their phones, without an easy solution! I've updated my n900 and the ovi store still doesn't work on it, despite it working in the past! When I contacted Nokia, they said I had to send my phone in to get the problem fixed! What gives?!

Anonymous, 14 Apr 2010This comparision is quite silly. There are two main reasons... moreNot to mention symbian uses apps that can be downloaded directly from the developers site.

Last year when opera came out, who to you think needed ovi store?

Everybody went to opera.com and downloaded it symbian market is somewhat more... "unconstrained".

(opera mobile of course, not opera mini)

This comparision is quite silly. There are two main reasons for nokia having a lower number of downloads.
                1. Iphone users are heavily dependant on apps to do even the very basic of tasks which most nokias have out of the box.
                2. Symbian runs both sis and java apps which are found in many places on the web while iphone users can only get apps from the app store.
Also, nokias major smartphone markets are in developing countries where people mostly download cracked app from sources outside ovi store.
Gsm arena should have mentioned thses facts in the article rather than dissing nokia!
BTW iphones, if you phone is so great, keep it to yourself. Why do you bother comming here to comment.

i have a N900 and have only downloaded angry birds!!!! nothing else on there i use the maemo testing and Dev site for my apps!!!

big up Maemo!! woop, however the app store has usful apps and useless apps so lots of rubbish is downloaded and counts towards this...

how can who ever give you these numbers tell you how many "out of OVI" i download apps??? it cant

Apple can only download from App store. so unfair IMO

Why is the number of downloads in it self interesting?

I guess I have downloaded around 50 apps. Almost all of them proven to be useless to me and uninstalled again...

All (but one) free app's ...

What COULD be interesting is the number of available applications...

And don't forget the number of most frequently used apps preloaded.
If someone decides to deliver a 'stripped' and a 'packed' model - no one will be surprised if there are more downloads from the 'stripped' on... (Even if the base phones were exactly identical)

You guys should rather watch how many downloads the piracy forums have.

i dont see why it matters how many downloads take place its the quality of whats downloaded. the appstore has many quality apps and fun apps, who cares if theres loads of rubbish. all you gotta do is search if u kno what u want.
i just cant wait for iphone 4.0

App store has many downloads because iphone users download most and almost all apps from there i.e app store. Whereas nokia users download from all over the website like getjar.com, mobile9.com, symbiantalk.net, dailymobile.com, nokiasoftware.com, ipmart.com, opda.hk, etc etc. Unlimited. Inspite of that ovi store has 1.6 million downloads. .
Nokia users should be PROUD !
I laugh at apple users and app store.

The majority of the App store's stuff is worthless stuff that no-one actually needs. The OVI store includes a library of applications that are actually, you know, useful? Most of the key things in the appstore are there to unlock the functionality of the iPhone, where as OVI enabled phones have it all pre-installed. The quality perhaps is better for Appstore stuff, but thats because Apple controls it like a hoard of totalitarian dictators.

Overall they aren't really in the same league. £600 phone + more for key apps vs. say...£200 5800 with mostly free apps. No brainer in my opinion.
