ony Ericsson returned to net profit in the first quarter, posting a result of EUR 21 million versus a loss of EUR 293 million a year earlier. The company attributed the better results to the launch of new products such as the Xperia X10 and Vivaz, and its restructuring programme, which aims to reduce annual costs by EUR 880 million. The full effect of the restructuring is expected in the second half of this year. Sony Ercisson shipped 10.5 million phones in the quarter, down 28 percent from a year ago. However, the shift towards higher end phones and positive currency effects helped the average selling price increase 12 percent to EUR 134. Total revenues fell 19 percent year-on-year to EUR 1.405 billion. The company finished the quarter with cash of EUR 563 million, afte receiving another EUR 150 million in a 50-50 injection from its parent companies in Q1.

thepineapple1, 16 Apr 2010cant wait for SE to go down and vanish. I had 4 high end no... moreI have had my W960 for almost two years now. It has been my primary phone up until last week (when i got the X10). The battery easily lasts for over 2 days, and its very solid. Absolutely no software problems, or any of the touch screen problems that some people say they are having. I did drop it for a second in water accidentally and the keypad went bizzare, but SE changed it for me under warranty and I have had no problems with it since. And now the X10 is the best phone today, nothing comes close to its killer looks. SE rocks.

Sony Ericsson proved wrong the analysts, who predicted that Sony Ericsson will suffer a 128 million Euro loss. Moreover, Sony Ericsson posted their first profit nearly after two years, they proved wrong to all who predicted that the company will soon perish.

                  This is 2010, dude!

SE has one of the BEST & LONG lasting battery in the market (based on my personal experience!)
You know after a FEW years, the battery lost the capacity & you've got to change to new battery right?

SE Walkman + Camera + Design is one of the BEST in this world, putting iPod (and the over-rated iPhone) to shame.
Without the APPS, Apple is pretty much lame...

cant wait for SE to go down and vanish. I had 4 high end nokia models, up until Nokia got sucky and i wanted to try something different. Since 2 of my closest friends got K850, i had to be even cooler and go with the W960. all fun and games until the software glitched. it kept thinking i was pressing 3 buttons, even if i wasn't holding the phone in my hand. after getting it fixed it worked ok, but then it went back, the screen wouldnt tap and the buttons wouldnt press well. i found a work around, but then the battery started dieing at a tremendous rate. 1 hour talk time, and some times 2 charges in a day. and screen brightness at 40% and still no help. meanwhile both my friends k850 battery went crazy, and the phone would shut off even if it was fully charged. eventually 1 broke for no reason and wouldn't start up, while the others doesnt have functioning buttons. we vow to never purchase any SE phones ever. quality is not good. what i found really good were the headphones that came with the W960, but the phones are just trash. Going back to Nokia this month. So long SE, you will never be missed again.

ramin, 16 Apr 2010i think market share in not very important to companies i ... moreAgree! Market share is plays second fiddle for companies like SE and HTC, the first thing is profit, profit and more profit. Market share growth will naturally follow with more sales and growth of portfolios.

SE's major mistake before was chasing after market share with mostly mid to low-end and ignoring the high-end which resulted in a lot of similar phones with not much difference between them (Nokia made its fortune this way) thus resulting in the mess they had for the last 2 years and more.

I think they have learnt their lesson, at least I hope so.

I see Q2 as very profitable for them when you consider the X10's sales and the upcoming X10 mini, pro, Vivaz pro being major sellers for SE during the next quarter.

It is looking much, much better.

i think they want to gain a good profit to make better and better phones and gain more and more profits
SE should make more mid end and high end touch screen phones to gain more profit
                                SE&HTC for ever!

A very pleasant surprise. All were expecting loss reports. Its just due to the overwhelming support of SE fans who grew up with a SE phone as there first phone and never say die spirit of SE. But on a more serious note. SE must stop sacrificing vital features on there sets, esp: Auto focus- Flash, Video Call camera and Touch Screen or Screen resolutions, if they serious want to better the compilation which are way ahead in customer satisfaction rating.

SE can still win x10 more (pun intended) by killing off redundancies across its product range.I'm talking about feature and dumbphones.1 too many sliders in the same series for example.I'm not talking about the newer series.Need a clear example? No portrait slider Vivaz.Just a touch and a proper landscape touch+hard QWERTY.Those needs to be streamlined.Bring "J"=Japanese style/design/build quality ONLY clamshells if or when necessary or don't do clamshells if they can't.Look at the GreenHeart initiative;another slider there? What's wrong with a full touch model instead to accompany the bar phone? And the trickiest thing of 'em all.Fucking fix the firmware team or start firing people AND DEFINE the smartphone OS branch strategy NOW.If they must avoid WP7 then by all means but if they're gaming for it then for the love of God do not half ass on WP7's hw reqs.

However, the things will be ever better after the X10 and Vivaz pro, just wait and see. Now I'm going to rock the gym and enjoy the great achievement of SE, let's go and pump some muscles to feed them with the SE POWER :D

Patience is a virtue and look when we were patient things are turning better for SE now. I am really happy for them and as a customer, I am looking forward for more cools high end phones! More MP's Cameras with better lens and sensors, more HD recording models, more Andriod's with 1.5 GHZ and so on. Since SE is winning now be sure that they will continue to give us the the best they've got, and they've got a lot my friend :)
