Anonymous, 27 Apr 2010Nokia currently has 1.1
billion customers globally
using ... moreCorrect, Nokia is in a special position.
I myself is a symbian user and the N82 is still the best botton operated camera smart phone ever made.
Problem for Nokia is, the competition is catching up with them fast, their lack of a N82 successor already made me buy the Satio, but that only makes the issue of S60 5th clear to me: The Business model is outdated and its operating system interface does need a change for good.
Simply, to check a contact's actual phone number at the contact list has I need to apply four steps, where it should require no more than two step. (satio resolve this S60 issue that by adding an extra layer at the home screen, but still requires Three steps.)
There are tons of quick UI tricks Symbian OS can learn from other newer OS. Users now have too many choices and streamlined interface than Symbian.
In the years ahead, it is catch up or DIE slowly!

Sales records typically don't
stand ... moreis that "sales" or "shipped"? There is a difference...
How many of such units were given away "free"?
Anyway, if 1100 is so successful, why the company even bothered to "upgrade" with 110x or 120x?
That shows the almighty brand should stick with the low-end segment. Forget about the high end, it simply can't compete with others now.

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2010Nokia is a world leader in
mobile communications,
driving... moreWhen Motorola was making mobile phones, the almighty brand was making TV's...
When Motorola offered video call on its first 3G phones like A925/A835, the almighty brand's 3G phones didn't offer such, or required an additional cradle.
The almighty brand REFUSED to release any 3G touchscreen phone only AFTER Apple released iphone 3G.
YEARS AFTER Motorola / Blackberry / HTC adapted the mini/micro USB plug, the almighty brand adapted the "plug" but NOT the charging ability...
The leader and innovation....

[deleted post]The analogy is: a truck typicallly has more horsepower / torque than a car.
Yet which offers better acceleration, bet you know the answer...
Symbian is always sluggish, hangs, reboots.

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2010Oh and what explanation can you give for the lame 256mb RAM... moreno doubt nokia has been the leader in symbian market, but their N97 is a making me unhappy, wat can a phone with max 55 RAM do with a huge 32GB memory? just another paper weight. Nokia pls listen to user's feedback & complaints & produce more stable & reliable gadgets!!!

Sales records typically don't
stand for too long without
being overtaken by the
next best thing, but
somehow, Nokia's el cheapo
1100 handset has reportedly
racked up "over 200 million
sales" since it launched in
2003. You heard right, this
low-end candybar has put
the 100 million iPods, 50
million RAZRs, 10 million
Chocolates, and 115 million
PlayStation 2 consoles to
shame in terms of sheer
units moved. Interestingly
enough, the design team
that conjured up this cash
cow originally dubbed it
"Penny," and the stripped
down, dust-proof mobile
purportedly entered the
market at precisely the
right time to catch the
booming overseas growth
as folks worldwide began
snapping up their own
cellphone. Of course, such a
basic, uninspiring phone isn't
for everyone, but
considering the 200 million
strong that owned one
sometime during their life,
we'd say Nokia found a
winner
By the Way,jaz search the Phrase "Best selling Mobile phoner of all time" at Google then Pls count Nokia Handsets that are on the list

[deleted post]If court ask apple to pay nokia one billion for the patents, i think that amount is too little.
Nokia should charge apple some dollar per iphone sold from the day 1 until apple disconnect iphone

The industrial design of the device itself is as boring as watching paint dry and pretty typical of Nokia's conservative design approach, unfortunately. I have a Samsung i8910, which is also a black rectangle. However, it's a much nicer looking rectangle compared to the Nokia N8.
While I agree with others about the dullness of the UI, that can easily be changed via theming into something more exciting and eye catching.
As for Symbian^3, I'll wait until I have a chance to try it for myself before I comment on it.
