Inside info from a Sony engineer friend: there's some odd patent held by someone in the USA on fingerprint reader integrated into the power button (my personal guess it's whoever owns the Motorola portfolio), so Sony decided to remove the feature before introducing the devices. Originally, they didn't even consider releasing Z5 family in the USA because of the weak sales and the cost of the modification.

The Sony shows its limits in his judgment. They lose money because of all sales will be weak

DonAlduck, 15 Jan 2016Yes it does! No issues at all ;) Sony Z5 - UK userOn that I've being using it for some months now and I've had no issue with the sensor. Although I have to admit that my friends that have it tend to not use that feature at all.

                          Just maybe...
Sony did not agree to that licensing agreement there...
The fingerprint data to be accessable to third parties in case of...as stated by the agreement.
Maybe Sony is not keen to allow that kind of data manipulation. ;-)

by this move sony will not even launch z6 in US. no demand. finger print reader is only feature consumers would have upgraded.

think i should get one of them then :) more safe and doesnt give out my fingerprint ;)

Fingerprint is useless marketing trick. I prefer Smartphones without it.

Lex79, 15 Jan 2016Nice, so essentially if you don't have an Xperia, keep you ... moreI have the Z3+ Dual.
It's one of the smoothest Android phones I have ever used.
Eagerly waiting for the Z5... fingerprint sensor or not.
Sadly, you cannot compare Apple to any other OEM since Apple calls the shots.
Apple doesn't bow down to carrier rules.
Regarding the iPhone 7, people will complain about the loss fo the headphone jack and purchase the phone anyway... the complaints will die down and as always, Apple will laugh all the way to the bank.

C'mon do we really need fingerprints? It is not bringing more security, contrarily it's a security threat itself!

It entirely likely this decision may have more to do with the US carriers than anything else.
