Xiaomi has locked the Redmi Note 3 bootloader, Mi 4c and Mi Note Pro are next.

I agree to you that this might not matter to most of the people using Android devices, but still it is not a good practice preventing users from doing the same.

Coming to my own situation - i just hate the chinese OEMs mimic IOS in Android skins. I was thinking about buying Xiaomi Note 3 pro as my next device - with the hope that I don't need to put up with MIUI and use cyanogen custom ROM. Now, Xiaomi has made my decision easier. I will stick to Motorola branded phones (of course made by Lenovo) with near stock android.

      well i'm a mi4c user and ain't too happy about it. an ota than may brick your device for good ? damn you xiaomi what are you thinking. safety for locking the bootloader is just an excuse. dirty little company.

          Company Xiaomi not proceed correct. Common sense would be leaving free not locking.

              Given the abysmal custom rom selection for Xiaomi phones this is hardly an issue.
              IMHO you buy a Xiaomi phone for MIUI and what MIUI offers. Using other roms kind of defeats that.

              You don't see Apple users complaining because you can't install Android on iphones.

              I get the whole "open source" crap about Android but we all know that's hardly the case.
