Muthu, 18 Jan 2016You know what - Being able to install a custom ROM is an im... moreNobody is forcing you to buy anything. I've said it before, buy Xiaomi for MIUI otherwise there are many other Chinese brands.

Back to the locked bootloader, Xiaomi's reason is pretty sound since they can't control who is reselling their phones and what changes they are doing to the firmware. It appears that many resellers temper with the original firmware to the point of severely compromising the software experience.

Anonymous, 18 Jan 2016Doesn't matter as I been using MIUI stable ROM since day 1,... moreObviously you're not a golfer . . lol.

Yes, there are "rubbish" custom ROMs out there, but if you're so dim as to blindly install random ROMs that don't have good reputations, then that's your own stupidity.

What's EQUALLY stupid is assuming that all customs are "rubbish" and "ametuer". But if you wanna be a slave to Google and be done with devices once they stop getting updates from Google, I guess that's your choice.

Android is OPEN SOURCE for a reason, and the fact that there are reputable ROM developers out there is the reason I am still using a G2 while you're pacing around waiting for an OTA that may not even come. While you're waiting for your Android M, N, or P update on your S7, Note 6, G5, A9, etc., I'll be on CM 13 or 14, or AICP v11 or v12, enjoying all of the newest features on my supposedly " obsolete device", and more than likely outperforming your new " STOCK" flagship.

      :-)

Anonymous, 18 Jan 2016Doesn't matter as I been using MIUI stable ROM since day 1,... moreThere are custom roms based on the original, but without bloat, with languages/charsets, and fixed thermal profile (the original is quote bad), proper/latest google services.

        Not so useless actually.

GSMArena, thanks for posting news like this! While most people do not care about freedom, there are some for whom such news are important.

I like Xiaomi phones for their Fastboot Roms. you dont have to go to service centers to flash any Rom. with any windows PC anyone can flash latest ROM and do not have to worry about bricking your device. and now if locking a boot loader does not allow us to flash Fastboot ROM then its a very sad thing for all the owners. i mean if we brick the device due to corrupted data of OTA Rom then we are in trouble. xiaomi service centers are not widespread in countries other then china....and we run the risk of bricking our device.

dev, 18 Jan 2016Given the abysmal custom rom selection for Xiaomi phones th... moreI buy Xiaomi phones for the hardware. It offers a lot of phone for the price. Whenever there's a functional CM build available, I'd install it on my ASAP.

Apple users buy Apple devices and be done with it because they can't do anything even if they want to. Or they just invested a lot in the iOS ecosystem.

Coming to Android, it's entirely different. There is a whole lot of classifications among the user groups. Every one want different things. So, they customize their phones (read install custom ROMS, custom Kernels, mods etc.) according to their needs.

About the article, Xiaomi used to ship every phone with full unlocked bootloaders, which is a good thing for developers or power users but bad thing for security. They realized this now and decide to lock them. No doubt this is a welcome change. But the process of unlocking the bootloader must be hassle free, like what Sony and Motorola does. Instead this entire procedure that Xiaomi invented is ridiculous and biased.

Fans phones, now i explain expression Bootloaders.
This means next- "The boot loader is the first piece of software started by the Bios or UEFI. It is responsible for loading the kernel with the wanted KERNEL parameters, initial RAM disk, before initiating the BOOT proces"
                    Now did you understand ?

good move if only unlocking bootloader is an easy process.most of the users don't root their phones it is a good move to increase security.

Xiaomi provide update almost monthly, don't see a need to waste time installing amateurs custom ROM.

Majority of the people don't know what is a bootloader, whether it is Locked or not.

Majority of the users don't care. Less than 10% care about this.

I like MIUI for what it is despite its high ram usage (though it never caused any trouble with any app on my Mi3 ). So I don't mind if they are locking the bootloader as I don't update the software unless I face some issue and that too I do it offline.

But I can see how this move will make many look for different brands. I hope they at least make the process of unlocking bootloader easy and hassle free.
