Apple revolutionised the MP3 space by creating an eco-system around music with 5 major labels in 2003, and that's no small feat. I don't get why people can't give them the credit they deserve...

There are a number of services attached to all Apple products - including the stores & genius bars, phone support, on top of all the costs of developing their own OS, etc.

When you buy a Ferrari, you get beefy specs perhaps, but in the end the raw materials are no different to what BMW use, and the ferrari costs 3-10x the price. It's no different.

But you bet that you get more customised and personal service on top of other privileges when you buy a Ferrari that you won't get with a Toyota.

You don't see it because you don't fall into the target segment, but others do.

Whereas you know exactly what you're getting when you buy a Ferrari over a Toyota.

This is the nature of doing "business".

Companies like Apple wouldn't be around still if people didn't value them.

Likewise, margins on Android phones are so low these days, that manufacturers do not make any money off them any longer. Xiaomi sells a LOT of phones, but its profits are not from their device sales - rather from the eco-system they've built around media content and accessories.

As a premium brand however, people expect to buy products at higher margins. Don't honestly think that a high-end handbag is worth its raw materials only.

As for your quote on Steve Jobs, you didn't paraphrase it well. At all.

With innovation, people really don't know what they want until you show it to them, since innovation in itself implies that the product or service didn't exist in such a way before. That doesn't work for most other things in life however, and jobs had always been very good with his own intuition and a team of world class designers. That doesn't mean he did NIL customer research. iPhone obviously took many years to conceptualise and produce.
