Not much manufacturers are recently on stock Android (there are some claiming "close to", but still) nor upcoming products from various manufacturers, not on top Android manufacturers, neither on competitive top Chinese Android manufacturers. And not much manufacturers are also blessed with a license or agreement to use the upcoming top-spec Exynos. We shall see how that will translate to but as early as now, I expect future users testifying how either chipset would lag regardless of which Android manufacturer they use it from considering various Android makers do not incorporate identical UIs/skins

With stock android, I don't see a mobile powered by SD 820 or Exynos 8890 to lag unless they put 512 MB RAM (like apple do) OR UHD display (like Sony did). If the device is properly made with all other right components, I don't see a reason why it would lag with stock android. Touchwiz is a different matter altogether.

And I have never claimed the 810 to be faulty, just that it doesn't represent a significant step forward over the 805 in any real way (and in some ways appears to be a regression).
Also agree that it looks as as though reference Arm core designs such as the A57, do not work well on the 20nm process.

But the process die used in Helio X20 is indeed an outdated process which still using FAB at 20nm. Note that Samsung already use FinFET at 14nm which give performance boost while lowering power consumption (hence cooler chipset). Even TSMC (the one who manufacture MediaTek's Helio X20) actually has 16nm process. I don't know why MediaTek chose 20nm over TSMC's 16nm.

We are there already with Kirin 950 as a starting point with Cortex A72 cores. Please check Anandtech's review of Huawei Mate 8.
I am fairly confident SD 820 and Exynos 8890 will take it to next level once they are released.

high end mobile processors are just too powerful, nobody really needs that much power and overheating is inevitable. It got to the point where high end brings more disadvantages than advantages. Battery consumption is another disadvantage. Add ridiculously high (nobody needs, of course) ppi and the more and more usual lack of sd slot or other limitations and owning a "flagship" means your phone is mostly for ego boosting and not so smart.

Let's see what they tested, the performance drop in heavy gpu use with a benchmark app and the performance drop in heavy CPU use, influenced by a app that just runs the shit out of the CPU and measured the frequency.
Looking at a real world use, there is nothing, nothing that more than 0,1% of smartphone users do that needs uninterrupted CPU load on max. You just don't need it. The highest load you put on your phone is graphic intense gaming. And when I compare that, I can see that the 6p drops, but so does the galaxy s6. And they drop to almost the same performance. So of course the 6p drops more because it had a higher score than the galaxy s6 when cool but in the end you cannot really give the nexus a minus because it is just "not better anymore" than the galaxy s6 in heavy gaming use.
That said, this review just shows my personal experience between the galaxy s6 and the nexus 6p. Except smoother animations on the nexus (like always in the nexus line) and another kind of multi tasking behavior there is no subjective speed difference between those two devices.
Other than with the xperia z3+, this sd810 just gets sooooooo slow you would not believe it until you used one on your own.
But this difference is archived due to some engineering around the SOC to get rid of the heat, my bacis statement, that 20nm manufacturing process and a57 or a72 just don't play well together can stay as it is. And to change that you have to do a lot work around the chip...

They did some stuff (huge cores , optimisation etc.) But at the end of the day they have a CPU at a frequency of 1.8 Ghz that clearly matches and even outperforms other manufacturers 3.6 Ghz cores.
