Phone locking is a deal breaker. I don't understand why in a state of freedom you can't use your phone freely even if you pay for the full price. I buy it, I own it, I can use it with whomever I want. You have no right to lock my phone! If you get you phone locked, I get your phone ditched. Such a jerk!

Seriously, it's not a big deal, samsung still sell the one which is unlocked, and regarding regional lock that's not something new, every manufacturer does that, for years, you'll only need to make a phone call in the country you bought the phone then it'll be unlocked and you can go travel with it anywhere, so there's no reason for you to worry.

Hmm...As long as we can pay on the net to get an unlock code I'll be fine with it. No different than my other (S4) phone.
As for one users comment about 'losing' information if you change a SIM...not clear on that...unless the user is saving stuff to the SIM card; which is completely silly now days.

This region has to be selected and cannot be changed frequently based on your travel profile.

But how about the phones sold on contract through the carrier's online store and delivered by courier? It means that an employee from the carrier will have to open the box, insert a sim card, setup the phone and then send it.

Just an FYI, the Samsung stores in British Columbia all sell carrier locked phones. They do not sell unlocked phones. I paid full price at a Samsung store expecting an unlocked phone and nope.
Also, even if it is carrier locked, you can still unlock the phone via third party.

then lock your phone so you cant resell it (since most people buy from carriers so will end up with locked phones).
we will probably see a post tomorrow showing they are starting a sim unlock feature for a small fee .. because they care sooo much about their customers.
if you are going ot buy one of those phones and you travel and use other sims.. youd beter make sure you buy the sim free version...

People, it won't lock all the phones to carrier, only the ones specifically designed for carriers. Other phones will stay unlocked no matter how many sims you change.
And regarding region lock, all manufacturers do this, that is why some phones get updates eearlier and some little late.

Samsung never gave us clear instructions on how to unlock a regional locked phone. It was always very vague from what I can remember and doesn't give me confidence. I need to travel and use local sims in different regions. If I don't know exactly how to unlock this I will have to go with Xiaomi Mi 5 or LG 5. Sorry Samsung! This region locking is really confusing at least to me

Samsung will make two versions of their phones: One for selling freely (without SIM-Lock) and another to sell to Phone-blocking carriers.
Currently the model works like this: Let's say AT&T needs 5,000 Samsung phones, T-Mobile needs 3,000 and Verizone needs 1,000. Samsung haves to pre-lock every phone, making them match the pre-loaded code with the one on the SIM-Card and then loading the carrier's apps.
On the new model, they will produce "Blank" SIM-locked phones, that scans the code on the first SIM-Card they get loaded with, then save the same code. Then, maybe trough a webpage or a Samsung/Carrier-Provided software, the carrier's apps will be loaded.
Read carefully the article and you'll see this will be implemented only on Carrier-locking phones, while still producing and selling unlocked phones to use them with any carrier.

As far as I understood - this is only for subsidized Galaxy S7s sold by carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.). Usually, a carrier phone is locked to the carrier's network - as are the iPhones.
Samsung solution for locking seems to be quite clever - they are giving the carriers phones, which are in an AWAITING LOCK state. And those phones will lock to the first carrier they connect to. That's the reason the carrier's employees should always insert your (carrier) SIM in the store - so the phone can lock to their network.
The warning for the carrier employees about setting up your phone after inserting your SIM card is because the phone will reset if they do the opposite. Note that the phone will not keep resetting after switching the SIM card (with one working on the same carrier). It just does it if an AWAITING LOCK Galaxy S7 gets its first SIM card post setup. This should not concern anyone.
Finally, it's just a rumor for now, so there is nothing you should be worried about. And if it turns out to be the true - then there is no surprise - carriers usually lock their phones. And the locking process has nothing to do with the users - they won't even know how it was done. When they get their phone from the employee, it will be a locked Galaxy S7, and that's it. No resets, no procedures.

You should then make a phone call of 10 to 15 minutes duration using any EU SIM. After that, you can even use it to any country in the world with different SIM.
But if you buy an EU region specific S7 and travel to another non EU region country, inserting the non EU regional country SIM will not work. This exact thing happend with my S6.
But again, not to worry. Just visit any local phone repair/unlocking shop and they can unlock your phone in an hour or two with little charge (mine cost me only $11).
