Apple finds iPhone 4 signal bars misleading, hiding poor signal

02 July, 2010
Apple just issued their official statement on the non-existent iPhone 4 reception issues. What iPhone 4 users are experiencing when they grip the lower left corner is just their real signal, poor as it seems...

Apple states, "Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place."

Does this means holding your phone by covering the lower left portion with your hand corrects the formula and shows you the correct signal strength? I did not know that a physical touch can correct a software formula?

This is more than just pulling our leg...

I have almost regained my trust in GSMArena! sure they have one sheep editor or two but finally I see GSM in GSMArena and less bling and shiny interface influences.

I also read already about the way apple was going to fix things on the iphone fever :p

There was also an alternative that would literally melt your brain: http://goo.gl/9c5M
I hope not even apple is stupid enough to go that far.

i can't believe they've just done this. i own a 3GS and always suffer some issues when the signal just dies, but never due to the way i hold it!

I don't think that's related to software issues.
As you can search 'iPhone 4 Drops Calls when Left Corner is Touched' in YouTube, you can see you will actually LOSE your call. What that means is that no matter how the bars are presented, you will still lose your call when your 'hold it wrong'. That's the EVIDENCE.

droid, 02 Jul 2010Ahhh the steady slope to apples demise as the leading phone... moreSince when was Apple the leading Phone company... It is just a self created (or created by apple for this matter) illusion.

One more problem.. According to this, when it shows 4 bars, it actually mean 2 bars.... Then why is that other phone lying beside it show 4 or more bars and mean it... Is the Iphone that bad at getting a signal.

Or is this Apple trying to mislead it's customers and trying to make this obvious design flaw into a software issue?
