It is depends on the screen to body ratio too.
2 years ago I used 130.7mm handset with 4.3"(56,6%) after 137.5mm handset 5" (70.4%) and now 143.5mm 5.2" (70.9%) .
The current handset littlebit big, also littlebit thick, but I think I could feel comfortable a 5" handset which has a right dimensions. Also nice design, good materials, what is feels premium in your hand and fit right.
I think the Xiaomi Mi 5Pro is a good choice 5.15" ceramic back screen to body is 73.1%.
Or the new Huawei P9 full metal, s-t-b 72.9% but for me the design littlebit uglier from P8.
Also I had to chance to use a Galaxy Note II and a Nexus 6.
After a couple days you will feel the right way to handle your device. so is matter what size is your pocket and what you need for.

An ideal phone for me will be an exact refreshed and modernized Nokia 6310i with monochrome display plus 2.8 inches. For multimedia device, a 6" smartphone is the best partner for that refreshed 6310i

For me about 5 inches is perfect, it's maybe a bit big to be used in one hand but still not impossible and feels pretty good in hand. 5.5 inches is too big, it doesn't feel as good in hand anymore. I previously had LG G2 and now Galaxy S6 Edge, both screens are pretty perfect for me.

At the moment I have a 5.5" screen. A little bit larger is welcome. For me the max is 6.0".

In reality, a phone shouldn't be bigger than 4.5'' but this days the ideal for daily things seems to be 5.2''

welp... Basically. below 5 inches (or even 5) is fine for me. anything bigger. (unless for gaming) is a no no for me.

... for me, 5.5" screen is the ideal phone screen. a 5" seems so small for me, anything less than 5" is a no no!...

5,4' - 5.8' depending on bezel size and whether buttons are capacitive or on-screen. Nexus 6P is perfectly handleable (medium height and hands size male) for me

my sweet spot is 4.7" (nexus 4 size) even 5" is too big.
I still hope there will be a nexus 4 (2016) something like that.

6" at least but screen to body radio must be at least 75% i have nexus 6 6" 74% and xperia z ultra 6.5" 68%. screen to body radio.I am disappointed whith new lg g5 and sony.they have worse s.t.b.r. than older models.and for me 16x10 is better than 16x10 course i use phone more portraid.

5.5 inch is to me the sweet spot. anything above 5.8 inch is ridiculous And so far lg g3 is the best 5.5 available, followed by the s7 edge.
