But optical zoom uses a lot of room!
Optical zoom is not only adding the optical zoom, it requires more work then a setup with just a lens. It adds some distortions. And you need hiigher quality componets to get as good picture. Nokia have tried optical zoom in the past.
Nokia have used a big sensor, bigger than in many compact cameras.
They are free from distortions of the optical zoom lens.
And according to themselves they are caputring close to 12 megapixel in details. And it that is true, it really good, you dont see many compact cameras that does that... perhaps in some cases due to the optical zoom?
So you will have a picture, that you can crop in your computer, and zoom in on details that way, instead. and that method is probably best for most camera mobiles.

I don'... morewell, the main thing that android and ios have dont is make the smartphone fun. yes there is a lot of eye candy, but thats what makes it appealing.
at the end of the day i agree 100% that functionality is far more important that eye candy, but gain, its the software the troubles me on that end. you say you dont care for the amount of ram, but there in lies the problem...i used to think like that too, but the n97 made me realize just how important it actually is. in order for that functionality to work, you need software that supports it. on demos the n97 was perfect, and i honestly thought it would be my next smartphone, give or take a fw update since most nokias need a few before they function well. but no fw update changed the fact that the n97 was a flop.
hense why im very skeptical for the demo's i've seen of the n8...and i've seen them all, good, bad, multilanguaged ones, just so i can get the best idea of how it performs, but even then, i'd have to see it when its released. for now, i remain skeptical lol
anyway, thanks for the luck, i really need it:P and deep down, i do hope nokia proves me wrong on everything im saying, but like you said, different people have different expectatioins, and for me, android, more specifically, nexus one, seems to fulfill them the most, though i would miss not having a pocket cam should i go with it....hell, even the symbian guru up n quit on that OS and i cant be a third of the symbian fan that he was lol - i guess since im seeing more and more people move away from symbian, it makes me doubt it that much more, ya know?

I don't really care how much ram or how fast the processor in term of number.
I care more on performance. From what i can see in most of the video demo, the performance of N8 is not bad at all.
I am not sure if N8 can upgrade to Symbian^4 or not. (although the possibility is there)
Can you explain a bit of what modern UI Android OS or IOS provided that N8 do not have?
I think it is not very suitable to compare a non-touch screen device like N86 to HTC Hero.
To me, touch screen device certainly will provide better user experience.
This is one of the main selling point for touch screen device over their non-touch screen counterpart isn't it?
Also, no matter how great/modern the UI may looks, I will get bored with it in less than two months.
But if the functionality is there, i will be happy.
Different people will have different expectation to a phone, I respect yours and wish you all da best in your next phone :)

nokia's main flaw with the n97 was ram. do you think that it will be enough for this phone? what with internet browsing, gps and multitasking added onto the mix?
also, there still hasnt been any word if the phone will upgrade to symbian 4, which would be a real issue for me personally, since S4 is said to be out around spring of next year.
i agree on the themes part, which i've always loved about symbian, but the themes only mask the problem. the UI is still there, nothing has changed aside how icons look. it doesnt change its usability, or make it fun like the more modern UI's make it.
imo, if they added more ram and for entertainment sake, a bigger battery, i might be a bit more enthusiastic about the phone, and be more forgiving for its lack of eye candy in the UI, but the fact that they remain on this ego trip to prove to everyone that there phones dont need as much ram as the competition is only hurting the users. which is another reason why im worried about this device, and im trying to get as much feedback about it as possible...i am planning on getting a new phone soon, and i dont know if this one is worth the wait...
i originally planned to get either the n86, or htc hero.....a year later i honestly regret not getting the hero. so now, despite the upraded OS, im having difficulty believing that nokia's symbian platform will improve....also, the USB otg, and the HDMI....i honestly think that only a small minority of users will make use of such features......they are great bragging stories, but i really dont see a large amount of people using those features besides the first show off moments of them getting the new phone.....but thats just my thought, if anyone else reading this disagrees do tell me how and why you would use such features on a basis that would justify the device having them * once or twice every few months is an example of poor justification**

i agree with anonymus. Nokia's Symbian in whatever incarnation is just old and cannot stand the test of time. I was a proud Nokia user, but they really have fallen behind in the os department. Android and Iphone OS have improved much and are slowly taking over. I agree in the lower end, Nokia will still have many users, but in the high end department they are really silly. I was sure to buy the N8, but now that i've seen what Android can do i will make a compromise. Milestone from Motorola should take care of users wanting a good snapper with xenon and advanced os in the form of Android. Sorry Nokia, but no more:) Regards!

User experience is important. I agree.
This is why Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 improve their eye candies.
After seeing the videos demo, i am quite satisfied with N8's UI.
At least for me i think that the N8's UI is user friendly enough.
I personally feel that it is more important to get a device that can do all the things i need while have some nice eye candies than to have a device that have very catchy eye candies while cannot do what i really need them to do. Further more symbian UI can be improve in many ways for example using themes or some weird apps call MyPhone.
As long as the hardware is there, we can always improve the UI with apps.
But for a device that do not have FM receiver or 12 megapix camera, there is no way for me to upgrade it regardless how powerful the software is.

all very true, but what about the user experience if you will, the UI on nokia is not only lacking in the looks department, but its not as polished as android or ios, and its not as user friendly. all the things you mentioned are great, and i love doing them too, my current phone, the n86 is great, but only for making calls and using the camera. the UI is not fun to use at all, going through menus to do simple things isnt great either, and i've always personally thought that the 2nd most important thing for a phone is to be enjoyable when you use it...it could be because i am younger that i prefer the newer UI's on android and iOS, but i think its more than that, and i think its why nokia is failing state side. people want a phone these days that not only does it all, but gives a great overall experience, and sadly, im starting to think that symbian will never learn:( which is why im asking what you can do that another mobile OS cannot do.
i will hand it to nokia though, best smartphone camera!

Use the FM Transmitter at everywhere with FM receiver.
Connect to my thumb drive and browse the file in it.
Bluetooth transfer a large 1.2mb file to my friend at a restaurant without any help of a Mac/PC...etc.
Take really great looking photo at dark karaoke room.
Replace with another 32GB spare memory card immediately after i finished up my current 32GB memory card.
...etc :)

Anonymous, 09 Jul 2010make phone calls without it dropping outoh har har har....look, this issue is blown way outta proportion...in order to have dropped calls you will need to constantly hold the phone in the same position with a fair grip on it.
so far, i havnt seen people get dropped calls.....data transfer is a different matter which iphone and apple are retarded for making such a design flaw, but please, dont use the "dropped calls" excuse, because if thats all, then youre only proving that both phones do pretty much the same things. aside a few minor things that a minority of the population will actually use, like the n8's hdmi and usb otg.
hense why i asked the question, both do social networking, iphone's and adroids kills symbian for this, its a much better experience on those platforms vs symbian's, android and ios have more or less the same USEFUL apps and tons of pointless ones, where nokia is lacking in useful apps. so maybe you could tell me then, what can you do on nokia *any symbian device* that you cant do on say, android and or ios aside real multitasking....and please give me good examples.

No thanks to the Nokia N8. I already own the Nokia N82. While it has Xenon, it didn't have LED to use as light for video recording. The N8 lacks it too. How else can I record my sex tapes in the dark? ;) Looking forward more to the Nokia N9 and Meego. Never want to go back to Symbian. Buggy and Nokia stops supporting it with updates in a year or so. N8 looks to be the last with a dying OS. It lacks optical zoom too. Digital zoom is pointless. But I admire Damian for working hard on this project. Thank you.

you ca... moreI happen to be able to manually type the address in the popup tab on my n95.
I don't use the inbuilt browser much though. Basically because of one thing. Download manager. Try opera symbian. It rocks only its not so easy on ram. 7tabs would kill your phone.
