You can't set opera mini as your default web browser on symbian smartphones. Opera mini for symbian is written in java and i don't think symbian gives that much permission to java apps. However, you can set opera mobile 10 as your default browser. Opera mobile doesn't compress web pages though. It loads them as a pc would.

Anonymous, 14 Jul 2010heyy ppl...i have opera mini in my nokia 5530, how do i set... moreHi friend. There's an option to change your default browser in your 5530. In case if its not working then go to your default nokia browser and type the url www.skweezer.com and see the change. You can view the web pages in mobile format and also the data is compressed and web browsing becomes faster. Try it.

I'm copying this from my other post under another article.

What everyone fails to notice is that Opera Mini is a different kind of browser. I have an HTC Desire and use its stock browser for most things. When I’m out of 3G coverage area, I switch to GSM and use Opera, as it is so much faster. Don’t expect the full internet from Opera Mini. Notice the word Mini. Opera Mini is not comparable to Safari or stock Android browser. Opera Mobile is. That is not currently available on either Android or iPhone, unfortunately.

The unique selling point (oxymoron, I know. Opera Mini is free) of Opera Mini is that it reduces data consumption and provides fast internet browsing on slow data connections while rendering web pages almost exactly as publishers intended them. It does not claim to support flash or pinch-zoom and does not make those features its priorities. Opera Mobile supports pinch zoom and a host of other features. No flash yet, but latest beta for Windows Mobile is experimenting with it.

Bottom line, don’t set your expectations too high for the little guy. It does brilliantly the job it has set out to do.

imac, 14 Jul 2010Opera mini is not a web browser and i personally don't like... moreOpera mini can also show web pages as we found in a PC. Just go to menu>settings>mobile view (off)
after this no web page will be pre processed in opera server and directly sent to your mobile. You can even play facebook games with that mini.

i tries it now, it uses pinch zooming but here is the trick: u pinch to get one zoom regardless of the extend of your pinch! so it's actually a tap zoom that can be performed by pinching! yes it dosn't open flash and it didn't claim to do that (other browsers don't either), but it's really smooth and with good options,, i gave it 4 stars!

I have just tried the new opera mini. It lacks flash and pinch zooming. Other than that, I'm relatively please with its speed. Anyway, do anyone know how to open a new fresh tab(not open a new link in new tab)? I'm still new to opera mini.

On the Beta, unlike the default browser on my Hero I couldn'y get flash items to run. Does this latest version support flash??

imac, 14 Jul 2010Opera mini is not a web browser and i personally don't like... moreFor Symbian, there is a Opera Mobile (different from Mini) which renders the pages AS IT IS without missing elements. It renders pages directly unlike Opera Mini which users Opera servers to compress them first. Opera Mobile works smoothly on Symbian as its in native .sis format(size ~6MB). Opera Mini is also there for Symbian (in Java) and you know how it is.

Using this now on my Dell Streak, really impressed so far. Looking forward to getting home from work and trying the bookmark sync with my PC. I use Opera on that, and was a little put off by the BETA version not rendering sites very well, but this release seems solid and I've not found a page it struggles with yet.

Not sure about using it when the Streak gets the Froyo update, but it will be more than good untill then.

Opera mini is not a web browser and i personally don't like how websites are rendered on it for people with powerfull phones and unlimited data plan or reliable wifi hotspots opera mini isn't really usefull it omitts a lot of elements that one would see on a pc or default browser which comes with your phone. But for those with with midrange phones especially symbian (since most of them have mediocre hardware like x6,n97,5800) which usually struggle when opening full pages on their default browsers then opera is a really must have software and its also usefull when you are in a slow network or in a costly 3g network provides with a limited data plan.
