Samsung unveils 256GB microSD card, shipping in June for $249.99

10 May, 2016
A year and a bit after SanDisk unveiled its 200GB behemoth of a microSD card, Samsung has managed to best that. The Korean company today has announced a 256GB microSD card, which is UHS-I, Class 10 (U3) compatible.

My RN3 is cheaper than this sd card.

    Gon-j, 10 May 2016Most of us would opt for class10 and UHS 3 (u3) 64gb/128gb ... moreThis is already a U3 card btw using the UHS-1 interface.

What you're describing is UHS-2 and consists of extra row of pins which the reader / slot needs to support. Otherwise getting a UHS-2 card will be for naught and it will just fall back to UHS-1 speeds like what this card is already producing.

No phones' micro-sd card slot has ever being claimed / certified to be UHS-2 unfortunately (yea not even the current generation of flagships). So no point getting a more expensive UHS-2 at this point in time unless you have specific equipment support.

Errant reporting. The sandisk card is not in the same ballpark as this card.

This card is in the pro+ category of speeds: UHS-1 Grade 3 Class 10. (Up to 95MB/s read, 90MB/s write)

Sandisk 200GB is only a UHS-1 Grade 1 Class 10 card. (Up to 90MB/s read, unstated "lower" write)

Now that evo+ encompasses pro+ speeds, is Samsung hinting that future pro+ cards will be UHS-2? Interesting

Gon-j, 10 May 2016Most of us would opt for class10 and UHS 3 (u3) 64gb/128gb ... moreYou can have that speed in writing with the Samsunf Pro+ MicroSD ;) (It achieves 95 Mo/s in reading though)

Trooper, 10 May 2016Half the capacity, and not fast enough for recording 4k vid... moreI agree on the R&D. Samsung has taken us forward in doing so.

My personal opinion as an average consumer is that: Half the capacity for 1/5th the price. It is a steal for most people including who would record 4k video on Galaxy S7. According to the GSMA review of the phone, bitrate is at 48Mbps(6 MB/s). The smaller Samsung cards consistently does more than 3 times that as write speeds. GoPro Hero4 does 4k at 60Mbps which again is well within the limits. Samsung can do 20MB/s write which is 160 Mbps.

But for a professional with expensive equipment; 1. Cost is usually ignored, 2. The camera has a full sized SD card and one would prefer that.

I have to admit that I am wrong about my opinion on one count. The price I posted from ebay is way lower than the MSRP when launched. Similarly, the 256GB card too will shed its price after a while and be a lot more affordable.

Very surprisingly, when I googled it, I found it even cheaper than ebay on the official Samsung US website.

Boooooom!!! There it is! 256GB! As predicted, this thing is needed for those heavy users. Price is steep right now, but it will go down. 512GB next 2 years.

128GB is OK for me now, but having extra space to replicate EVERY music you probably have on your PC, some of your favorite films, and space for media recordings and downloads will be again much needed as we move to VR recording and beyond.

It's not for people who insist that "64Gb of internal memory is enough". Yes, memory expansion is staying.

And, cramming double the amount of data on to a physically same sized space isn't as easy as you think when it comes to something the size of a finger nail, which obviously adds to the cost (think: R & D).
