Apple gets all defensive, free iPhone 4 cases for everyone

16 July, 2010
Apple just finished off its press conference dedicated on the iPhone 4 reception issues leaving us quite puzzled, to say the least. At one point Steve Jobs was saying that every phone has a weak spot, then he...

Really bad static noise interference. Apple couldn't help me at all, so I was forced to sell it and buy 3GS on the release date. I can handle minor software bugs and things, but bad reception while on a call is a major no no for me.

I'm not sure many stores will have working models on the floor as display, but i guess that will be a good way to test it out. Thanks for the tip. (never had working models on the day of release, so i guess i'll just wait a few more days)

It affects a very small percentage of actual users.

It has been blown out of proportion by thousands of bloggers across the web.

      Their motivation?

Apple is making the lions share of current handset profits, more than all the other manufacturers combined.

The "issue" can be easily reproduced on almost any smartphone.

nice to see how apple and it's fans cant handle it yet they see no problem dropping blackberry And other phone competitors into a mess they created. Apple were the only company to go on about how great and revolutionary their antenna design was. Apple fans also had no problems when apple ripped into the vista os and intel's processors.

Hm, here is my question. I live in one of those 14 countries that will get the iphone4 in end of July. Will the iphones released in my country have all the same faults? or will it be fixed? (judging by their unchanged schedule of release, it looks like the later released ones will still have the same flaws?)

non iphone users have expensive unlocked phones so we can afford the iphone.

The reason non iphone users are complaining isnt they jealous or "haters" its more from the fact that they a 3rd person view of the device and can clearly see a faulty device that shouldnt have been released yet aka faulty antenna design(most major)...perfect example: person goes to buy a car and the salesman wants you to test-drive a car because they know if they can get you to love it that person will put up with whatever faults it may have...true every phone has probs nobody is disputing that..but being sold a faulty device buy a slick salesman is wrong...and they care about the mobile community reason why the "haters" make a big deal...because simply it isnt right...the haters are simply trying to throw up caution flags but people have blinders on so the "haters" have to try harder to help you see and avoid the pitfall!!!

Cars often get totally recalled so why should not phones that have a faulty design that causes total phonecall malfunction, IT IS A PHONE, also be recalled, a car costs more than a phone? Apple obviesly thinks iphone4 buyers are complete idiots and pay and accept any crap from apple.
Apple is more evil than Microsoft ever was!

[deleted post]And why would we be anyone's problem? The real problem here is, non-iphone users like you whining about issues that doesn't affect you at all.

A lot of us iphone users have been saying over and over again that we are not affected by this exaggerated reception issue. We even like the iphone4 more than the 3gs. Why can't you leave it at that? Why do you keep coming back?

People have been buying cases for their touchscreen phones. Why is a getting a case for the iphone4 so unusual?

Get over it. Let people get the device of their choice. And if there's a bad consequence with it, let them suffer for it. Why do you let yourself get so affected?

The reason why this became such a big deal, is not because of iphone users, but because of non-iphone users who posts complaints on Apple forums, and the media blowing it way out of proportion.

                                  Hmm... Interesting
RIM and Nokia have responded to
                                  Apple's claim that all smartphones
                                  have the same attenuation and
signal loss issue that the iPhone 4
                                  has. Here's what they said:
RIM's co-CEO's Mike Lazaridis and Jim
                                  Balsillie:
                                  "Apple's attempt to draw RIM
                                  into Apple's self-made debacle is
                                  unacceptable. Apple's claims
about RIM products appear to be
                                  deliberate attempts to distort
                                  the public's understanding of an
                                  antenna design issue and to
                                  deflect attention from Apple's
difficult situation. RIM is a global
                                  leader in antenna design and
                                  has been successfully designing
                                  industry-leading wireless data
                                  products with efficient and
                                  effective radio performance for
over 20 years. During that time,
RIM has avoided designs like the
one Apple used in the iPhone 4
                                  and instead has used innovative
designs which reduce the risk for
                                  dropped calls, especially in areas
of lower coverage. One thing is
                                  for certain, RIM's customers
don't need to use a case for their
                                  BlackBerry smartphone to
                                  maintain proper connectivity.
                                  Apple clearly made certain
                                  design decisions and it should
                                  take responsibility for these
                                  decisions rather than trying to
draw RIM and others into a
                                  situation that relates specifically
                                  to Apple."
                                  Nokia:
                                  "Antenna design is a complex
subject and has been a core
                                  competence at Nokia for
                                  decades, across hundreds of
                                  phone models. Nokia was the
                                  pioneer in internal antennas; the
                                  Nokia 8810, launched in 1998,
                                  was the first commercial phone
                                  with this feature.
                                  Nokia has invested thousands of
                                  man hours in studying human
                                  behavior, including how people
hold their phones for calls, music
                                  playing, web browsing and so
on. As you would expect from a
                                  company focused on connecting
                                  people, we prioritize antenna
                                  performance over physical
design if they are ever in
                                  conflict.
                                  In general, antenna performance
                                  of a mobile device/phone may
be affected with a tight grip,
depending on how the device is
                                  held. That's why Nokia designs
                                  our phones to ensure acceptable
performance in all real life cases,
for example when the phone is
held in either hand. Nokia has
                                  invested thousands of man
                                  hours in studying how people
hold their phones and allows for
this in designs, for example by
having antennas both at the top
and bottom of the phone and by
                                  careful selection of materials and
                                  their use in the mechanical
                                  design."
Nokia didn't mention Apple by name
                                  (probably because Apple never
mentioned them) but made a point
to say that Nokia is a company that
                                  "prioritizes antenna performance
                                  over physical design". We can
assume they think Apple has it the
                                  other way around.
