First real Symbian^4 shots are here, we hold our excitement

18 July, 2010
It’s been a while since we last heard something on Symbian^4. While ^3 is yet to roll out, its successor already showed its face. The shots are taken from an emulator of the OS, but there's no wow factor yet...

If Nokia think that this is going to unseat the huge momentum that iOS and Android has achieved, they are crazy. Just as Apple shook up the industry in 1997 (and Android is doing today in China), so Nokia will have to release a device so advanced, appealing, compelling, USEFUL and with a robust GUI to stand a chance.

Other than their excellent mapping, and well priced versatile mid range 'Limbo' phones, Nokia are living in denial. (Limbo phone being a device you own or borrow whilst waiting to acquire something more substantial, such as an iPhone or HTC Desire.)

Yes, they have updated their resolution to nHD on all their touchscreens, stupid nokia. And they also make fones which can make calls without using a case, strange? I heard that all their fones can be held in both hands...how strange is that?

However, of course this won't stop hackers..and sure enough some clever N900 owners ran the Meego beta on their phones. But officially, the N900 won't be upgradeable to Meego.

Nokia does not assure us directly but they don't say No either.

Reading between the lines on Nokia statements, I think the possibility is quite high..

Looks like Nokia is giving Symbian a complete facelift - which is exactly what its UI needs. Hard to really make any judgments on these early screenshots, but IMO anything that's a departure from the outdated, clunky looking Symbian we know today can only be a good thing. Symbian for mid-range devices, and Meego for high end phones is a good move for Nokia I think. Can't wait!
