Apple squeezes the reception out of Nokia N97 mini

21 July, 2010
Apple seem keen to prove other smartphones have the same reception attenuation as the iPhone 4. And they are getting back with a video of Nokia N97 mini that suffers from the same grip of death as the iPhone...

TruthSeekr, 21 Jul 2010Apple is a great company...but this is really a cheap stunt... moreWho's Apple pointing fingers at?

Apple was being attacked by the media on a common issue that all phones suffers from.  How else would they react?  What would you do if you alone got suspended for something that 50 other people did as well?  And after being suspended, you're also put under probation.  Would you just keep quiet and take everything in while the others are enjoying and walking around freely pretending they're innocent, and they're not even your friends.  Be realistic.

Yes, the ip4 has attenuation issues.  But the question is.  Is it really a big deal for its users?  No it's not.

Samsung Galaxy S is more successful than Iphone4. Why? Because of its display production limit, its causing has been selling like hot cake. Analyse this.

Samsung said that its wave and galaxy s has sell more than 1million each since it launched it 1 month ago. Samsung Display could only produce 2 million of AMOLED display a month. Thus it isnt that Samsung Galaxy sales is lagging behind iphone4 but its Samsung component production thats causing it to lag behind.

Tried it with my normal N97, didn't work.
Friend of mine has an N97 mini, just dropped 2 bars, that's it.
Not way as much as the new Iphone does.

Steven Job needs to stop kicking other brands, and begin to admit the problems, and try to find a solution for it.
I'm not pro Nokia or anti Iphone, but people who paid a lot of money for a phone like this deserve better then this.

Steven Job stop being childish, and fix the problem, instead of burning down other phones!!!!!

Has anyone notice how in the apple pics/video they have to have a " super death grip" to make the bars drop. To make a iphone 4 drop bars you just have to bridge the two ants in the video's those guys are holding the other phones so hard they're fingers are turning red and white to do the same thing. I dont know about you but I dont hold my phone that hard. Come apple just eat it and leave it alone.

Apple is a great company...but this is really a cheap stunt from such a company - instead of accepting the fact and saying "Yes, we messed up the antenna" they go around pointing fingers at others.

Yes, every antenna loses signal if you COVER IT UP, we get it!
But the difference with the iPhone is, you don't have to COVER the antenna the same way you do with the other phones...just TOUCHING the ends is enough to cause this effect - and THAT IS POOR DESIGN!
(check out the tests from Anandtech and others on what I mean)

PIRATE, 21 Jul 2010Ok, u seem to be lacking some technical info. Ill explain s... moreThe only area that seems to cause the signal bar drop, is where that tiny black strip is. It shorts the antenna when you grip it. That small area can easily be avoided unless you have really big hands. A case pretty much eliminates the problem, which iphone users do anyway. And the signal drop does not always mean you'll drop a call.

The ip4's external antenna gave internal hardware room for Apple to improve other elements of the iphone while keeping a very slim design. Is it worth the trouble? I say yes. It is only the media and the haters who have exaggerated this whole attenuation issue. Users seem to be making and receiving calls just fine. Users and reviewers even claim that the iphone4 has better reception and call quality than the 3gs.

The proximity sensor bug is even less concerning and is an isolated case like the yellow tint spots were.

As for the glass case. It is a strong glass, and it's indeed highly scratch resistant. But it is still glass. And I personally prefer it over plastic. Glass will stay new looking for as long as you take good care of it.

Anonymous, 21 Jul 2010it happens on almost all phones, i just tried covering the ... moreOk, u seem to be lacking some technical info. Ill explain since u have no knowledge of the issue, ur tiny phone has an internal antenna which is better protected from light electric currents conducted from the human body, and ur tiny phone can be covered better with ur hand than other phones which will show u a drop in signal.

But the truth is that the Iphone 4 has an external antenna which we all know for a FACT that it is prone to the human body electric current and when gripped in the wrong way which is so called the "death grip" loses a huge amount of signal and fast, which may end up to dropped calls and disturbance in 3G connections. If u compare the iphone 4 and any other phone in an area with weak signal ull notice the huge difference and which of the phones lose signal faster.

Plus the external antenna is not protected and is prone to falls which may damage it, which will lead to a larger failure in reception. (This is comparison between a stock product with a stock iphone 4, NO BUMPERS INCLUDED )

Plus the iphone 4 has a proximity sensor issue which will probably be fixed later on, but it is still an issue which is NOT convenient for a user on a call, specially a long chat.

Another issue is the so called toughened glass, well it appears to be not so tough when tested, and shatters easily, the video is on youtube for who is interested .

it doesn't matter how many bars the main issue is how was the signal reception,i used it may be 2 bars but still able to establish a good and stong signal.
