Apple squeezes the reception out of Nokia N97 mini

21 July, 2010
Apple seem keen to prove other smartphones have the same reception attenuation as the iPhone 4. And they are getting back with a video of Nokia N97 mini that suffers from the same grip of death as the iPhone...

Apple is desperate. But even if we accept Apple's videos as "accurate", we can all see that Apple tries hard to grip the other phones in the most unnatural ways to be able to cause a drop in their signals. As if trying desperately to crush the phones. No person will grip their phones that way to make a call.
In contrast, iPhone 4 loses signal if you hold the phone in the most natural way.

Let me add something to my below post. I am NOT an Apple "fanboy". I used a Macintosh Performa computer in 1996 and since then I have always used Windows! I initially only had Nokia cell phones (which I still say are the best when it comes to low end basic phones). I used the E71 which was excellent, though now seems outdated and slow. I have used Android phones (most recently the Samsung Omnia). I agree that Android has things that the iPhone OS does not offer. Sure, I wish widgets were included in the iPhone. Of course, I want Bluetooth transfer for files. But I have to say, the advantages outwiegh the disadvantages regarding the iPhone. I mean, if you use a case, the iPhone 4 problem is GONE! And even without a case, you will hardly notice a difference (except for a few bars going down which will be solved with the new firmware update).

I would love to use Android if the phones had better battery life. And the customer service for Android phones are ridiculous. Compare Samsung customer service to Apple! And do you think it's easy to get an firmware update for Android? Yeah right!

The problem with the iPhone is that it is sooo popular and soooo hyped that it results in haters! Same thing goes for all things big. But that shouldn't hide the fact that it truly is an amazing product. I agree Steve Jobs acted like an ass...but then you have to understand he has to answer to a team of directors as well as PR guys...it's likely he was told to act that way. I think it was pathetic the way Apple handled the situation, but I still agree that the iPhone 4 is an incredible phone.

So all these guys reading this forum, please don't be misled by haters. If you want to go for the iPhone 4 (and you can afford it of course!) go ahead and buy it! You won't regret it. And if you would rather but a Samsung or some other Android phone, sure! It's just a phone really. There's a lot more important things to spend your time and money on anyway!

Apple need to admit that they made a mistake and stop trying to water it down by pointing fingers at other manufacturers. They are being very unprofessional about this. I use both an HTC Desire and a Blackberry 9700 with no problems. No amount of bitching about them will ever make me buy an Apple product....

Why do you even bother playing this little Apple game.

Any company that has to do this to show how great their phone is can kiss my ass.

I finally figured out how to make the bars drop on my Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. Its awesome. WARNING: may cause severe pain as it did in mine.
The way to do it is squishing the top of the phone in the palm of your left hand and the bottom in the palm of the right. Its amazing. After 5-10 seconds, the bars drop going from 7 slowly to 4 and eventually going up to 5 and stopping there. Seriously, the phone will leave a mark on your hand, especially the hand holding the bottom end. When your hands start to shake and the phone feels like its going to break, expect the bars to drop. I guess this would probably work with the Nokia 5800 and 5230 and welcome anyone to do an experiment on those devices as well as I did on mine.

Well, for all the BS marketing lines aka facetime and Copy & Paste, he's getting attention now about something he should have SERIOUSLY thought about.

Anyone can reinvent Video Calls that have been around for nearly 7 years, but no one has quite engineered a phone like Apple has.

Sorry, but it simply is a big deal. About as bad as the EuroStar breaking down due to snow... what a joke that was!

I think this is hilarious. The "untouchable" Nokia/Samsung/RIM are feeling the backlash now.
They can try to sue Apple, but they can't do because Apple are telling the TRUTH.
Any lawsuit over this would rebound so hard that they'd be paying Apple for years.

But it is going a little bit far. Lets move on people. I want more info on the N8 and the next HTC monster.

I am a Nokia N97 Mini User. I can tell you that i tried the Death Grip and the signal DID drop from FULL to 2 bars but NEVER to no bars. This only happens when i am at work. When i am at home, the death grip doesn't work. In a way , Steve Jobs is right, it happens to other phones and it really depends on the location....

All that Apple is doing is pointing out that other phones have this issue as well. What would you do if thousands of videos sweeped youtube, and even RIM and Nokia come out saying "we put functionality before looks". Keep in mind RIM and Nokia both released statements commenting on this long before Apple did their own experiments. I've been able to replicate this issue on my iphone 3GS which, btw, never attracted any attention. People just love to find problems with popular hardware.
