Nokia Q2 results are out, profits fall as smartphones get cheaper

22 July, 2010
And the results are in - Nokia just announced their Q2 financial results. To summarize - sales are up, profits are down, shifting currency exchange rates didn't help and smartphones have sold more units and...

You get people saying weird things on this site- for example this guy saying Maemo is better than Android... Bro, fyi, we've seen Androids and how they perform- have you touched anything Maemo? Have you at least, seen it? Very weird... Some would talk about how good or bad some phones are and they're not even out yet.

Let's get relevant to the topic here, we are discussing the fall of Nokia profits- don't you think if that Maemo you're talking about, would sell like hot cakes- equally, or better than Android HTC's have?

Apple beats Nokia on margins. As a consumer what is my main driver? When I am buying an Iphone the question should be - is it worth the USD650 it is being sold unlocked or is the "brand value" increasing my costs?

Shareholders of Apple should be happy with their continued good performance while those of Nokia should be sad. I think the reversal is also true when it comes to consumers.

My wish is that Nokia rolls out more competitive products in future at lower prices in order to make Apple lower their prices!

Android is immature still and the hype around it will end sooner or later as well and people come back to Nokia with QT SDK, MeeGo and Symbian being the best offers in the market still....

If I were Nokia, I'd get on the Android train soon, just to be on the safe side. Sony Ericsson made a large profit and with the hardware of nokia phones this might be an interesting synergy.

                  I think it's very simple.

All the big money is going to Android.
                  And Nokia keeps pushing Symbian.

If you made an N8, crazy camera (with good flash), top end processor, and sleek looks, BUT WITH ANDROID, I'd be all over it.

Now my money's going to HTC.
See how you just lost a potential $600?

I'm gonna cut all BS into these it's that simple.

2 things:- Optimized firmwares (NOT BETA!) and hardware (internal specs to OS reqs).Screw the 2 up and maybe we'll see Nokia bleed next year if they aren't careful. They're doing a "good" job at that up maybe till N8's the exception.

And FFS they need to revamp the whole low-midrange series properly and STOP making too much cheap phones where even us phone users in the 3rd world market aren't buying.Stop overpricing old phone techs.

There..I made it easy for you Nokia...Now about that payment...

Nokia failed to recognize the real problem why they can't catch up with the competition. Most articles I read blame the symbian but for me, symbian is a great OS. What's causing the nokia to compete is the hardware they are putting on their phone. While other phone manufacturers offer phone with 1Ghz CPU and 512mb RAM and metal casing, NOkia still offer 128mb ram, 434mhz CPU and plastic casing.

For me, Symbian is not a bad OS. It manages WIFI automatically, support USB connectivity, multitasking, and a lot of softwares available (SPB Shell, Skyfire, Opera, 360ting Music Player, TTPod are among the best software for this OS). If only the phone has good hardware specifications, they will maximize the power of Symbian!

nokia has never failed to deliver what a basic phone should do..

                              hats off to them...

but the thing is, they should slowly..surely.. bring in newer, more stable features...

well they have in some way, maybe they should make sure it is "useable"

again NOT COMPROMISING they most basic function of a phone.

Nokia must stop Symbian S60 series right now or stop Java S40 (save money) but still use Symbian S60 for low price. Symbian Foundation OS have backward capabilities software.

                                      Nokia,

No doubt, the wide range of features such as free GPS, Carl Zeiss Optics, WLAN, FM Radio are very good, but....

....to get back to the high-end smartphone market, way better "user experience" is needed. That's the trend now. That's what people are looking for. For me, why don't you release a smartphone with a 1GHz processor or better, make Symbian^3's or even Symbian^4's theme effects smoother, nicer and a lot faster. Take a look at the Kastor theme effect or the Speed Effect. And make them slimmer, the N900 is just way too bulky.

These are the key features that people are looking for:

                                      1. Slim form factor
                                      2. Very fast user interface / Very powerful processor
                                      3. Smooth Animations
                                      4. New user interface design

                                      That's it.
