Samsung built a 5.5 inch 4K smartphone screen for VR

28 May, 2016
Remember when just a few short years ago, the smartphone industry was shifting from 720p (1280x720px) to 1080p (1920x1080px) displays and we thought: What for? We don’t need so much resolution just to read text and see pictures off the screen, right?

Sony need to come up with a better way to save battery.

But we all know Samsung will do this first.

That's the evolution. At least better late than never. So let's follow Sony (Z5 premium) & because they were the pioneers of it (so compliments to Sony for it). But let's hope that this time there will be a lot more battery equilibrium

What we do know, is when they went to 2k, battery life wasn't really negatively impacted. Unlike LCD screens. So when they go to 4k, they should do better than LCD 4k displays like the one in the z5p.

And again, the z5p was a gimmick because the 4k screen wasn't being used for vr, the one place that would need 4k. Samsung is releasing a 4k screen specifically for vr. Its pretty clear which is the gimmick. Regardless of efficiency, at least they're getting the utility of it right. So its already less of a gimmick just from the way its being marketed and used.

AnonD-442781, 28 May 2016Samsung has done a great job with displays, ranging from ac... moreI have checking the S7 (3000 Mah) and S6 (2550 Mah) endurance, the battery capacity is gained from 2550 to 3000 Mah. You can guess how much battery capacity will gained in the 4K Amoled device. If the 4K is always on including the all UI display and all third-party apps display time and awaken screen-on period, it seen we could not find a positive point here,. So, which one is gimmick one?

Anonymous, 28 May 2016This one wont be a gimmick like Sony's one.Why was Sony's effort a gimmick? They actually handled the technical aspect of the 4K brilliantly: when you need it, the screen is 4K when you need it to be, when you don't, it scales down to 1080p. That's some awesome engineering and a fabulous idea.

And by the way, do you know what the first phone to have 2k screens was? Of course not, because it isn't a big deal. Nobody cares.

And anyway, Samsung is adding 4k not as a marketing gimmick like Sony, but for vr.

Sony's 4k wasn't battery efficient and was only used for viewing pictures and videos using Sony's native gallery app, it wasn't used for vr which is the only place you'd need so many pixels. The very definition of a gimmick.

why not they also improve attery capacities.. these 4k display is an overkill besides the use of vr.. 1440p is already sharp.. differences would be in color gamut..accuracy..colors.. if they also focus on battery..am sure they wud fit 5000 mah in galaxy s6 size device.. its possible.

Those Samsung screens also use PenTile arrangement as a marketing tool. Give me a 1080p RGB over a 1440p PenTile anytime.
