Samsung presents Orion - a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU

7 September, 2010
Samsung unveiled the successor of their highly popular Hummingbird processor - Orion. The new platform is based on 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU, packs a vastly better GPU and allows 1080p video...

Oh there will always be need for more powerful CPUs. Just look at where PC went. There was a time when 286 was considered fast and no one will ever need anything faster than that!

With better hardware, we will have more powerful software too.

As for Orion, it looks very good. Samsung's Hummingbird is already dominating the benchmark tests, especially with its GPU performance. And this baby improves Hummingbird's 3D five fold? Wow.

Look at today's benchmark results:

As you can see, Hummingbird is the processor to beat today. When other Cortex-A9 based processors appear from Qualcomm and Texas Instrument, they will probably exceed Hummingbird, but looks like Sammy is ready for the fight! :)

who the hell needs 1ghz processor on phones? CPU's for phones shouldnt even go above 600mhz imho.

why use 1ghz when the os of the phone doesnt even have real multitasking? *couch* Android, iOS, Win7 *cough*

"Performance" nice but Battery and Temperature not sure,,, i like simple phone,,, today "Display" size more than 3.5 inches,,, in future what hands can handle it? 15 inches quad-core processor mobile phone? i understand about high-end but its will be ridiculous!

No, the phones will barely get bigger I think. But damn, 1080p, not even my laptop can always play 1080p without proper codecs. So what I'm trying to say is that it's either the smaller resolution display that eases up that operation or the phones will only be able to play specialized 1080p movies, not the one's with the usual format... Because I don't think a mobile cpu like that could beat my core 2 duo p8400 2.27 ghz...

Dual core? Let the battery technology catch up first. The processors we have in our mobile phones are fast enough. But the battery life is far from adequate.

I wouldn't be surprised if the battery lasts half a day with of those in a phone.

speed, gaming experience, hdmi output etc.. all irrelevant. If the battery will only last 1 to 2hrs then no point in buying a smartphone. Technology has advanced but BATTERY longetivity is lackluster. All this advances will drain the battery, like a fat kid drinking on a fat straw.

Lets hope not that many manufactors get in to the megapixel videorace.
720p is enough to scale up to 1080p with good quality.
No matter the capabilities of the CPU, to save storagespace, the bitrate will be too low.
Better focus on getting 720p quality to a decent level, so a videorecoring by a mobile is of any use. And when that is done, only then should they focus on 1080p.

There is a big difference between video and stills.
Sure, there is a megapixel race within mobile stillcameras.
And since there is no optical zoom, this is a good thing. Well not when its poorly ececuted... but there is a gain from more pixels.
With video, people are not going to get in to heavy editing, so you cant really use the extra pixels for Zooming.
besides with 720p yu can use the extra pixels of the still-sensor to zoom. Look at N8, it will zoom with video in just this way.

Playing 1080p is a different story, cause tou dont want to have to convert videos to play them on your mobile.

"Most android phones have almost 20-30 processes running in the background at start up, this will only just increase with capabilities."
We can only hope that both Google AND the community devs have already grasped this particular issue tighter than a nun's >you know what< to be able to come up with the necessary solutions on time.

I partly suspect that Alui's right though....Until further optimizations and better efficiencies are at hand,Orion seems to be positioned better for tablets. At least on paper for the moment. It'd be great and much welcomed of course if some smartphones are being planned to the mix but we'll have to wait and see.

What bothers me right now is this so-called "selected partners" for testing etc. That game plan is a bit muddy.Until we see clear evidence of the current Hummingbird spec get adopted by say HTC for lack of any other better example,Orion's gonna be a long haul.

I hope this mobile won't come as a bulky and huge phone and they will find a way to maximize battery utilization more than one day for this processor and other peripherals included.

I bet they will not use it for smartphones. How the heck could you play a real time fast running multicontrol game on a mobile phone? The current Galaxy S is fast enough, you can play Quake 3 on it, but that would be just crazy. Imagine you have to run, jump, point to a flying target and shot, all in the same time. How can you do all that on a 4 inch touchscreen?
Anyway, if they use this in smartphones, I wonder wether the advantages it brings will offset the extra battery drain.
