Samsung's designed a slot that can take both UFS and microSD cards

11 July, 2016
This should make its recently announced UFS card lineup a lot more useful in the future.

Not to bash on Samsung, this is great news and I'm looking forward to phones getting slots for UFS and more companies making cards.

However, a lot of people are confusing evolution with innovation. UFS was created as a next step by a bunch of companies, Samsung just one of them. Also, do people get an orgasm when they use a 31-in-1 card reader with about 5-8 slots?

I'm pretty sure this was all well planned when making the standard to make a smooth transition, not something Samsung brilliantly thought up by themself.

But as I said in the beginning, kudos to Samsung for bringing it out first and getting the ball rolling.

This is no more the "future" than Blu-ray discs were the "future" of DVDs a decade ago. They were overlooked in favor of streaming. Similarly, SD cards are well on their way to obsolescence with many major phones not even featuring the technology these days. People use either the internal memory or the cloud.

The fruit company won't appreciate this. They don't know how to use or accommodate it in their product.

some companies (apple/HTC) still using mmc5.0 standard as internal. I'm happy with op3 though

To quote Dr Henry Wu in Jurassic World: "All of this exists because of me. If I don't innovate, somebody else will." If you haven't notice Samsung product placements in the movie, watch it again thoroughly

Not only the UFS + Micro SD hybrid slot, we need a UFS controller also in Note 7 which would take the advantage of the UFS card speed... Or enable its Speed...

This opens up a lot of new doors and some points that Sammy should consider :
                      1. Adoptable storage is truely meaningful with UFS sd card. Sammy must enable Adoptable storage in N7 if UFS hybrid slot and controller are used.
                      2. The UFS cards must be available in major smartphone markets. Highest capacity one should match the highest capacity of sd cards availabale , I.e, 256GB.
                      3. Do not make the price 5 times !! As the speed is 5 times compared to sdcard.
                      4. Data retention and total write cycles must be mentioned on the specifications and on the box.

                      Go Sammy....

Good stuff. Think I'll keep my 16gb micro SD until this becomes the standard. Probably be 3 years or so.

lottery248 bitcoin, 12 Jul 2016congrats, microSD can now be sustained for a longer time ev... moreExtremely sorry!!! Ican see clrly an ending to the reigning era of microSD, bcos technlgy never stops.Actually the fact is other OEMs will adapt this tech in a lightning first time. I bet !!

There is no more argument about memory expansion cards lagging the system. With 5 times the speed, all I can say is UFS will be worth buying over microSD. Just good news for 128GB microSD cards will be way cheaper for me to get for my older devices like for my Surface 2, so I can really put in my 80GB+ of my 1k of architecture books ebooks and PDFs.

256GB is going to be something, as I can have my entire files of OneDrive on my Galaxy Note 3. Just don't forget to encrypt your files for added security.

I can expect 512GB capacity by next year. OMG. That's the common 500Gb portable HDD capacity onto less than the area of your fingertip! I really want!

congrats, microSD can now be sustained for a longer time even UFS card taken over, since this slot is compatible to microSD.
