Samsung beats Apple to top PC market in Brazil

18 July, 2016
Samsung has become the top PC vendor in Brazil, overtaking Apple and Dell, according to an annual survey conducted by Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. The iPhone maker had to settle for the second spot.

Sort by:

This is because of price.

In Brazil, Apple's product cost 2x the value.

One example,
Apple Mac Air 13", i5 1.6GHz, 128GB, 4GB.
US: $ 899,00, convert to R$ 2955,00
Price with tax, R$ 7.799,00 ($ 2372,68) (Apple Brazil)

Samsung's, Intel® Core™ i5 5200U, 4GB, 256GB, Tela de 13,3”, Style S20
R$ 4.086,14 ($ 1243,12) (FastShop)

This is a fraud. I live in Brazil and can atest that.
Iphone prices are really expensive here, but Mac prices blow them out of the water when compared. A $649 iphone is 3,999, whereas a 1,299 is roughly 12,000.
The iphone market share here stands at 3%, losing even to the windows phones.
Imagine Macs, I highly diubt it gets to 1%. I have never seen a Mac user here that has actually bought his Mac in Brazil either(myself included).
I have no clue by what they meant, maybe it's population's desire, frankly only thing that makes sense.

And most of those seen are likely second-hand bought. Thus it does not affect the market of sold.

Paulo, isn't a trustworthy source, since it ins't a official research entity.

The minimum wage in Brazil is R$880, a MacBook costs R$12000, most of the population monthly payment isn't more than R$2000, housing is expensive, energy is super expensive, you hardly see anyone using a Apple computer, people don't have money for that, Samsung, HP, Lenovo, Dell and Positivo are the most popular PC brands here, because they sell cheaper laptops.

Everything here is ver expensive. An example is the iPhone 6s Plus, 128GB. In store American Apple, it costs $ 950, that is R$ 3,087 in direct conversion without taxes. On Apple Brazilian store, it costs R$ 4900 or US$ 1507, already with taxes. The minimum wage in Brazil is R$ 980, or US$ 301. The average Brazilian income is R$ 1,500, or approximately US$ 460. It is impossible for a Brazilian with this income to have a device that level. There was a Brazilian government incentive rate where some taxes were free, in exchange, manufacturers should bring installed some national applications. This cuts devices' cost in approximately 20 to 25%, but the law was valid until the end of 2015. Anyway ... with Brazilian taxes that suck 50 to 60% of the worker's income, it becomes impossible to have high end appliances.

There's something wrong with these numbers, due to outrageous import taxes, apple is hideously expensive, maybe 2 to 3 times more expensive than regular asian brands. I doubt it ever had even 10% of the brazilian market share.
