Samsung drops all Symbian support by the end of December

01 October, 2010
And when we say all, we really mean it. By the end of December Samsung will close its Symbian forums, developer site and will remove all Symbian-related documentation and data from its servers. Ouch!

couldn't they just move all the data to an archive section and make it freely available online? some of their highend phones like the omnia HD still uses symbian. if they are really hell bent on removing symbian, then they should provide an alternative OS to omnia HD owners.

Fair enough, Symbian has lost this OS race badly. Need to move on, can't keep supporting obsolete tech.

In my opinion the issue here is not if Symbian is worth the support from Samsung, BUT SAMSUNG ( if it was a serious company) has to support the client wether he bought a Symbian phone or other OS! when one pays 600 Euros on a high end mobile such as the Omnia i8910 HD( which in my opinion it is still one of the best mobiles around excellent specs compared with today's mobiles) one expects SUPPORT.

I think that this move from samsung will eventually go against samsung, many customers will stop trusting samsung. I will surely stop buying samsung products. I cant trust samsung anymore. I know now, that if i buy a samsung mobile they will sooner or later stop support. Nokia on the other hand keeps supporting their products, so why not Samsung. Shame on Samsung, being such a big company with NO SUPPORT AT ALL!!!! I have spend the last 600 Euros on samsung when i bought my omnia HD excellent hardware but NO support!

Jon2, 03 Oct 2010No one is to blame for this but Samsung. If they develop... more"It also shows that Samsung only supports what gives them profit the most. They are in the market only for PROFIT, and NOT for COMPETITION.
Thus, they only follow the trend, what is 'in' in the smartphone market.
They used Symbian, and now that it is obsolete (in their eyes), they switch to Android and Bada.
Soon, they will drop support for either Bada or Android, if one of the platforms don't generate them PROFIT."

I beg to differ this sentence, this is what ever company are focusing on. You do know keep on support a dead OS. But one sentence you mention did not make sense.

" They are in the market only for PROFIT, and NOT for COMPETITION."

If they are for profit not for competition, then where does their profit come from if there isnt any competition from them? Think with you brain next time.

Jon2, 03 Oct 2010No one is to blame for this but Samsung. If they develop... moreThey drop symbian not because of profit. They drop it because the market does not want symbian. If you really think that symbian is so successful, why is nokia so unsuccessful in the high end market ever since ios is out few years ago.

Think about it, even nokia fail to lift up the glory of symbian, why should samsung, who does not own any more of symbian shares continue to support this platform. Its a fail software. Don't tell me how successful nokia is, they aren't, if not their previous CEO wouldn't be oust out. Even the board of directors know that they are failing on the high end market, they are merely selling tons of cheap phone to developing countries. That explain the fall in their profit.

Samsung which earns more than 10 times of what nokia is, you think if there is a market demand for symbian, they couldn't afford to do so? Look at the sponsors Samsung has engaged in, they have the money, its just a matter of directing these money to the right channel, symbian is a dead OS, even nokia board of directors know that. Don't live in denial

It was inevetable.. Symbian is already the most outdated smartphone OS there is.Even Nokia is dropping it for their high end phones. Symbian 3 or w/e they want to call it is not going to save it..its time u all let go and put that awful OS behind us..And this is coming from a long time Symbian user.

No one is to blame for this but Samsung.

If they developed their own Symbian apps, like Nokia does with Ovi store, then they would still continue to use the Symbian platform.
Symbian is Open Source. Anyone can develop and modify apps to the individual's preference.
Failure to improve/develop Symbian apps is not Nokia's fault, but Samsung's.

It also shows that Samsung only supports what gives them profit the most. They are in the market only for PROFIT, and NOT for COMPETITION.
Thus, they only follow the trend, what is 'in' in the smartphone market.
They used Symbian, and now that it is obsolete (in their eyes), they switch to Android and Bada.

I repeat, Samsung is NOT in the market for COMPETITION, only for PROFIT.
They only want your MONEY. That's all that matters to them.
They don't give a damn about their customers.

who cares, symbian won't die, nokia won't die, that's for sure.
I love products like E72, E71, E63, E5 and these phones will always sell because people NEED them as a phone. They are simply serious business phones, not some multimedia big screen useless bricks. Samsung can't compete in this segement and their support sucks, so they quit.
