They give a answer to nokia and to competiton. Sony always will innovate this domain. The domain of electronics, mobile phones, video and photo... portable players.. walkam, cybershot, handycam.. they were pionners in this industry..

Who are these guys talking about prints on billboards... or A3?
I know that it takes about 8-9 Megapixels for A4 photo quality prints... and surely most consumers dont need more than that.
But!
In a mobile, without optical zoom, if they manage to caputre close to those 16.4 MPs, that means that you can do some fair amount of enlarging on details (crop to zoom, resolution zoom, or real digital zoom).
Probably Sony wont manage to get that with such small sensors, and probably not good enough optics.
But people, get it please.
If they do, 16.4 MPs is very usefull in a mobile!
Plus, with 16.4MP, you could actually get an image of 8MPs with real HDR (pictures taken simultaniously, not delayed as in the software version seen in N900 and then iPhone 4).
So stop this nonsense about 16.4 Megapixels being useless.
It sure isnt if the optics, and sensors are good enough, and the device lacks zoom.
And if you dont understand this, you dont know as much as you think!

Can't wait to get that 16mp phone from these guys. I've been a devoted Sony Ericsson since the P Series came out, I had a couple of T Series but, the P910i which was my first P series was a head turner when I got that. The P990i followed then the P1i, I was very impressed with those phones and that's what made me stick with Sony, how could I forget my W800 and the S710? Then came the Satio that changed everything for me.
I love Nokia phones also and I will keep buying both Nokia and Sony phones at any price because they are worth it. I got a pixon 12 ONLY because it was very cheap ($287), they say it is the best 12mp phone but definitely not to me!
It's always a pleasure to use my Satio, it feels new to me each time I use it and that's how I know I will never stop buying Sony. Can't wait until next year to see what kinda phones we will be getting.

SE 2010, 07 Oct 2010 dude it's true when people say that the mp number is not ... moreI agree with your statement and also nokia on way back..Samsung have had it good too but i have forgot all about LG to be honest and could not name one new model..I think s/e and nokia are more proffessional at doing stuff,,nokia and s/e do very good multimedia..It did take s/e ages to get away from that stupid qcif @ 15fps video recording but now have better results i mean come on we know s/e made the k750i/w900i/k800i which were in my 6x4 prints very,very good.In my opinion i think they should drop Android and leave it to others but bring out a top feature fone which they are good at.

dude it's true when people say that the mp number is not everything! But come on guys we are talking about se here! Not samsung or lg to have some doubts in them.
I mean the satio provided a 12 mp camera? how was it?! Amazing right, and most satio owners were very proud with the picture quality their phones have. So, again when Sony will release a 16 mp camera, this means it will also be provided with great sensors and lens, that will eventually result in better pics.
Sony just proves to the world again that they are a leaders when it comes to camera phones as they always were. It makes me proud to see such innovations, I'm also very proud to see what samsung achieved with their screens ( amoled + superamoled). Also, it's very good to notice that HTC are always providing their customers with very high specs.
Just be optimistic and enough with this negativity that your surrounding yourselves with, trust me it will also affect your real life which will result in pain and being misreable. If sony wants to provide the cell phone world with 16 mp camera, and HD recording that reaches 60 fps why not?!! It's us the customers that will be very happy to capture our special moments with our loved ones with really very high quality and with a convenient device such as our phone.
Sony Ericsson may have suffered with some serious issues with Android, but since it's their first attempt, I believe all these issues will be fixed in the future! Which means the best technology provided with the latest updates.

WOW.........SE iz back!Well i hope is sooner than later.I read all the comments above& is the typical hating etc.People remember is SONY we talking about,SONY makes the best digital cameras out there.So they can do anything in cell phones.16mp would be sweet,once they back it up in all aspects.SE need to make this 16mp cell phone camera as good like any digital camera12mp an more for SONY.Please do not worry about digital camera sales,they will sell.Just live up to your rep as the best digital camera maker out there.So do the same in SE camera phones!All haters,weep!Nokia N8........SWEET camera phone!Well the N8 will rain on top for now until SE drop there bomb on the market.I am an will forever be a SE fan!Right now they behind,but it's SE people.Things can change in a blink of an eye!Again haters,WEEP!!!lol

I know the trend with this, Sony announced the Satio and took forever to release it and then crappy samsung announced the pixon 12 after and released it first. stupid samsung will release a phone with a 16mp which is not a smartphone to rival Sony then Nokia will be last to release.

I said it and I will say it again, when it comes to camera phones no one beats sony and I mean no one! They were always ahead others, and even if others release strong camera phones such as the n8 for example, it won't be long until sony will make something better.
I know they had some major problems regarding the updates for andriod and honestly I don't think they did a good job at all. But frankly speaking we should give them credit where credit is due! And that's the reason I always advice gsmarena to stop being biased. Yes se may suck with some of their phones but they are the best with camera phones. So, enough with praising this java boring pixon 12, and be honest with your users and admit that se handsets have the best camera, and this news just proves my theory again.

if there is a 16mp made by nokia. All the fanboys will be clapping their hands off, and saying that you cannot wait. Its like when all the phone companies have a 8 mp phone out except nokia, fans said that phones don't need cameras more than 5 mp. Just saying!

I think Sony Ericsson should be the first phone to have this 16.4MP camera because Sony Ericsson is part of Sony (aren't they?)

Great! Now just throw it in the X12 with a Xenon and lens cover with LED placed outside the lens cover to double as a torch. Throw in Android 2.2 and MULTI-TOUCH and you have the best phone available.....
X10 had such potential and SE failed it..........still the best looking phone...no multi-touch, ridiculously late updates, and a weak, useless LED make the x10 a FAIL....

now, THATS what we"re waiting for,, after the legendary K800i now sony was back to the bussines,, now that the nokia & samsung was in the game, its time for the LEADER to stand up,, nokia's N8 was a serious image phone,, its time for the sony to rise up again,, hope that they will make the new 8megepixel model an affordable phone for students,, still we are waiting for the full touch affordable sony ericsson to battle corby and cookie,, hey sony,, you still have a lot of fans here,,
