Galaxy Note7 Gorilla Glass 5 display found harder to break, easier to scratch

To be honest I prefer scratch resistance over shatterproof. Even though I do drop my phone on occasion it's not very high off the ground and usually on carpet butt we are constantly messing with our screens with their fingers in and out of our pockets so I think scratch resistance to me anyways it's more important than she had a resistance that's why I would prefer Gorilla Glass 4 over 5

Its bull, starting with SGS4 scratch resistance was no longer scratch resistance... The new generations of GGs are worst than the early ones. I don't care about their controlled environment tests, i am using my phone exactly in the same manner and i have to say that the best was Galaxy S2. I never used a screen protector and after 2 yrs of heavy use the only intact area was the screen. I see all these explanations as lame excuses. Probably chasing profit and cost reduction diminishes a lot the quality of their products.
we buy phones also for their looks but afterwards we are forced to buy screen protectors and cases (which usually ruin the slick looks) if we don't wanna mess them up totally even if we use it normally.
And more, i am sick of the fanboys taking the sides of producers who are obviously not concerned about anything else than profit.

its a rule of thumb to buy a screen protector and a case for any smartphone with screen size more than 5inch
people do screen scratch tests with lots of stuff like coins, keys, screwdrivers, knives(seriously who the hell uses a carving knife on a phone)..the main villians are small particles that accumulate on fingers or in pockets..now depending on the person's lifestyle this will change..a person who gets out of his house to step into his car, straght to office cabin, then back home risks less..a commuter on the other hand has lots to worry about
sand is a screen's worst enemy, its silica, basically glass in its crudest form ever, but its harder than a phone screen anyday

I prefer to go for the scratch resistance as impact protection can be had with a minimal case and more important is protection from everyday common items in your pocket.

This is bad. By scratching at hardness 3, gorilla glass 5 is at the same league of hardness than the fully plastic Moto x force/droid turbo 2 screen. At least with the moto/droid, the outer layer is designed to be peeled and replaced once it gets too scratched. This does not seem to be the case with gorilla glass 5.

How ... moreThe giveaway that the guy doing the test in the video doesn't really know much about glass is that he claims that the hardness of Gorilla Glass 5 is only "one step above plastic", which is actually physically impossible. ALL glass has a Mohs hardness rating of 5 or 6, period. That's science. It's impossible to manufacture "soft" glass with a hardness rating of 3. What you're seeing in the video is not a scratch with the #3 Mohs pick, it's transference of the metal in the pick to the glass surface. However, removal of metal that is transferred is extremely difficult, so if you can see it, it may as well be a scratch. Get a screen protector, or just be really careful with your expensive phone.

Of course, I never touch them with anything other than my fingertip either. If the phone isn't in my hand being used, it's in my front pocket.

The test in the video is not an industry standard controlled test. Corning has responded to these so-called "scratch tests" on Gorilla Glass 5.

Personally I think overall its still better, if you use any sort of protective screen. Since that'll deal with the scratching but not so much the breaking.

I had use the tempered glass for the front panel only, drop too many times, still fine, the tempered glass just with very minor corner broken, you can say I am very lucky, because my Z2 never die yet and still update to Marshmellow 6.01
My previous Samsung phone just death after simple drop. You could say I am very unluck with Samsung, let you know the removable battery still make in Korea, this is my bad experience.
