Galaxy Note7 Gorilla Glass 5 display found harder to break, easier to scratch

The Samsung Galaxy Note7 is the first phone to launch with the new Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The main improvement in this version over the previous Gorilla Glass 4 is increased resistance to shattering when the phone is dropped.

Eske Rahn, 18 Aug 2016Actually a tempered glass protector can even help on drops ... moreI agree with you , but i have a small experience with tempered glasses which i will share now..
I am using Mi3 from past 2 years:
Scenario 1: I used just normal screen guard for first 6 months with several drops and due to GG3 ma phone survived.
Scenario 2: Afterwards i switched to tempered glass(9H) and within a week when it fell from ma hand the glass got broken
Scenario 3: Repeat of Scenario 2 after one month
Scenario 4: Repeat of Scenario 1 :P

So, by this I got to a conclusion that tempered glass is not hard as Gorilla Glass(Yes it takes the hit by itself), but every time it falls with some extra force tempered glass breaks and with the same force the GG wont break. So its good to have a shattered proof phone than a scratch proof phone so that tempered glass shall not be replaced every month but with screen protector for once in 6 months :P

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2016Scandal !!! By the way, no curved glass screen protector f... moreOh yes yo CAN get curved tempered glass protectors!
I got it for the BleckBerry Priv.

As long as the shape is 'linear' in one direction and is only curving in one it is quite possible.
      See e.g.
      http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311644309436

Basically a flat sheet that falls of at the two edges.

I beleive that a Scratch Screen Guard (Soft) not tempered glass, would probably be an ideal foil for this Glass. Most of us use a screen guard anyways, so, shouldn't be an issue. Maybe SAMSUNG should try and give a pre-applied screen guard like quiet a few manufacturers are doing these days.

Sure if the phone lands on a corner, the display is likely to break as well, but if it lands on the front or front edges, the protector is likely to take the hit.

I have trice had a device with a 9H protector, where the protector broke, but the display held - and have been so lucky to not yet experience a device with a tempered glass protector where the display broke.

It is not only drops, that can break a display. Also impacts, say a large dog playing with a stick bashing the pocket with your phone/phablet - yes I experienced that... A friend hit the corner of a table while playing with similar result...

Scandal !!! By the way, no curved glass screen protector fits EDGE screens.

Better than not , I see 99 percent of the people in my country either use screen guard or tempered glass for any type of phone(even s7 edge :P) . Those don't give any advantage when mobile falls from a height but gives protection to scratches. So its better to get scratched rather than to get shattered

I have never owned a phone without the protective layer. except old nokias. pay 20 for the soft ones, both scratch and fall resistant. plus it feels smoother

That's a bummer, plus the screen protector for this curvy glass is almost non existent/very expensive..

Well that's not surprising. You learn in school that harder stuff scratches less often but is brittle and more shatter-resistant/elastic/plastic something is the less hard it is.
