Galaxy Note7 Gorilla Glass 5 display found harder to break, easier to scratch

18 August, 2016
The Samsung Galaxy Note7 is the first phone to launch with the new Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The main improvement in this version over the previous Gorilla Glass 4 is increased resistance to shattering when the phone is dropped.

So not only is the phone a step backward in everything but number compared to even an old Note 3, but sobis the screen.

Seriously this phone is nothing but a tax on stupidity and I'm going to laugh at anyone dumb enough to buy it.

Better scratched screen than no screen :)

Anonymous, 19 Aug 2016Why anyone should get a screen protector? Todays flagship s... moreI believe its quite the opposite. Sure its nice when its scratch-resistant, but having a huge curved glass makes it very prone to shattering.

Which one you can live with: a few barely noticable scratches here and there which can't be seen with screen on or a few cracks all over the screen which are seen, like, always?

I prefer scratches over cracks. My phone fell a few times and luckily I have no cracks, only scratches. Replacing the screen because of cracked glass would cost a fortune.

I found that samsung phones get scratched quite easily. My note n7000 and note 4 are filled with scratches. so was my s4. Specially the s-pen scratches the screen a lot!

My nexus 4 didn't have any scratches on the front :S although it did have a few on the back!

            Fake video.
He didn't show how he scratches the screen.
See at 3.25 how he say that he use tool No5 for the back, but no scratches we can see to be made. Next second after he cut the video he shows scratches magically appeared. Pathetic.
Samsung must sue this guy , and take from him all the money Apple gave him.

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2016it is better to use a phone without gorilla glass like sony... moreand did you know that the word "shatterproof" means that if the glasss breaks "it won't shatter" because of a thin coating above it...thats it, i checked..my z1 got cracked and it got no replacement or warrenty..i was offered a refurbished phone at half mrp..but thats like buying another secondhand phone..my investment in sony went down the drain..

wow so much hate....scratch resistance and shatter resistance are interconnected..anybody familiar with quenching and tempering of steel should know this..its basic high school science..a given material can be hard but it will be brittle at the same time...to transcend this the compound itself has to change..
screen shattering may be laess common than scratches but it is more sever..you don't have to replace the screen if it gets scratches...(unless of course wolverine had a go at it)

and EVERYONE who buys smartphones puts screenguards on..so i don't see why this is a big problem..although i might be more pleased if samsung put on a samsung certified screen protector in the package

Use common sense, what is cheaper to replace a cracked screen or a tempered glass protector? I can live with a scratched screen but not a badly cracked one!

All phones should be harder to break and harder to scratch. But as GG4 was easier to break than to scratch it wasnt suitable. Because I had instances of screens breaking without the tempered glass suffering a scratch. So a anti shatter display with a plastic protector is waaayyyy better than a scratch proof but weak display. Tell me. A screen is more expensive or a protector?

AnonD-302271, 19 Aug 2016I dont use any protection for my phones and ive never dropp... moreDude. Shatter proofing is much more important than scratch proofing. A plastic screen protector costs a dollar or so. The note 7 just needs a simple cheap plastic protector. And this is perfect because anti shatter displays mean you can use thinner protectors instead of tempered glass ones. Its that obvious.

oh that's right, instead of using the S-pen, use any other metal to write on the Note 7 haha

It's edited video. How could you know for sure how he made those scratches? Did you see on this video which tool he used to make the scratches?
You can see many scratch-test videos on you tube, and no single scratch.
Until this guy don't make video how he scratch it and with what tools, and show the number of the tool without hiding it off the camera or without cutting-editing the video, just don't believe him.

I dont use any protection for my phones and ive never dropped them so hard. So scratch resistance is more important to me. Since its a dual edge design we cant find screen protectors easily. Whats the point of usings screen protector for having a gorilla glass.im very much disappointed

I prefer scratch resistance, and use a tpu-case to protect against accidental drops!

Ideally a phone is scratch and shatter proof... but that doesn't exist.

I haven't had a case or screen protector on any of my phones. No screen scratches or cracks but i am really careful with my phone. The Note 4 soes have a couple of minor dents to the metal edge. The Note 3 did get some scuff marks to the plastic back.

Personally i'd rather a small/large scratch than a small/large crack. I'd prefer a higher scratch level than 3 but I still think that the note 7 will only scratch if you don't look after it (i.e. put it in your pocket with your keys).

Anonymous, 19 Aug 2016Why anyone should get a screen protector? Todays flagship s... moreWell, almost any brand these day have a really poor repairability, so a screen protector IS a good idea to take any beating, as replacing the display is very costly - and you will be without your phone for a period.

It is NOT (currently) possible to have a surface that is both resistant to scratches and blows, unless it is very thick (and thus heavy). Think how thick a sapphire for a watch is, and modern phablets are SO much larger, that it would have to be even thicker to take the same beating - and that would not come cheap either...

A tempered glass protector you can have for a few pounds, and change whenever it breaks your self.
(If the display is rounded in BOTH directions, you might not be able to find a curved tempered glass that perfectly fits the display though)

Mkdc, 18 Aug 2016Simple solution to scratch: get a screen protector. Why anyone should get a screen protector? Todays flagship smartphones should be durable enough for everyday use. Scratches are more common than drops, so phones should be more scratch resistant firstly, more rugged second.
Don't you want quality for your money? I certainly do and I won't buy a phone with Gorilla Glass 5.
