Galaxy Note7 Gorilla Glass 5 display found harder to break, easier to scratch

18 August, 2016
The Samsung Galaxy Note7 is the first phone to launch with the new Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The main improvement in this version over the previous Gorilla Glass 4 is increased resistance to shattering when the phone is dropped.

Simple solution to scratch: get a screen protector.

It's so bad. According to this video, it's not only prone to scratches, but also fingerprint sensor is easily scratchable and unlike other models doesn't work properly after it gets scratches. In fact new glass is just a little better than regular plastic. Shame on Corning and shame on Samsung for such a crappy stuff on almost 1000 USD device. OnePlus 3 for less than half of price of Note 7 has a glass on fingerprint sensor...
It's also so bad that Samsung didn't listen to its customers complaining of easily scratchable fingerprint sensor on S7 Edge.

I love Qnovo, 18 Aug 2016Me too. Before this I am Samsung user, I spend a lot money ... moreZ2 was the most delicate and fragile phone my family ever had. Both of my brothers had them. Both of them had their phone had their screen shattered when it fell from pocket level at the very first fall. Both of them had their phone bent and shattered screen when the phone was simply laid on the table. And all the time, it had a flip case. Had bad experience with sony phones. You might be lucky.

I mean bow often do you drop your phone? To me scratch resistancy is more important than shatter profness

The important thing is how easy or hard it is to change a scratched gorilla glass.

This is the latest gorilla glass 5 from Corning, and it still get scratches. I guess it is going to take gorilla glass infinity just to be as good as Asahi dragontrail glass. :-P

                    Depends....I used a Note 1 for 2 years and a S4 for 2 years....both without any cases...dropped them numerous times..had a lot of scratches and dents...but NEVER a shattered screen....

Before this I am Samsung user, I spend a lot money to purchase a lot of cases, because I am worry the drop damage issue, BUT still damage after simple drop, it make me no confidence to any Samsung products.

I am a 2 years Xperia Z2 user now, it is a beauty and durable and waterproof. (PS: I am not a Z2 promoter, if someone want to buy a Sony product, then buy the latest: X performance and etc)

There shouldn't be compromises. But given the fact that Gorilla Glass 5 is like that, thus all the future phones having the same fate should use screen protectors like thin films or tempered glass to prevent scratches.

my Redmi Note 2, no gorilla glass, dropped many times, still no crack. but i put tempered glass on top of it to avoid scratches..i option for tempered glass because it has more resistant to scratch versus the thin plastic one. so my conclusion here is better the screen harder to break. but that is not the case on Note 7, because that thing is EXPENSIVE!! sammy should do something about the durability of the screen or else the user of Note 7 will see their money got scratches.

I hate screen/scratch guards. Never used one and never will.

Got a nice drummer grip and fast reflexes. Never dropped a phone ever.

I'm not a fan of cover and cases, it ruins the look of the phone and make it heavier and thicker. I prefer scratch resistance as I don't like screen protector as well. Haven't drop a phone yet cause I am careful with those things...
