Samsung pulls out the Galaxy S Froyo update due to bugs?

21 October, 2010
As you probably know last week Samsung released the official update that takes the I9000 Galaxy S to Android 2.2 for the Scandinavian region. But just as we thought that worldwide availability is a matter...

Galaxy S on Virgin network here in France: Got the phone on November 26th, updated to Froyo flawlessly via Kies on November 29th. Not a single problem since - no slow-go, no crashes, behaves perfectly, and supports the bluetooth keyboard I got for Christmas.

IMHO, then, it works and it's worth doing!

I was promised 2.2 would be out by about my birthday... It's now nearly Christmas & 2.3 is out, and still waiting...
The Kies PC software has updated 6 or 7 times (Over 1 gig of data) why not bundle it in with that? There's a upgrades to phone section built in...
Kies has also stopped working... Guessing cause it wants 2.2 ver of Android on my phone since last update? I hear Europe, USA, & Asia all have 2.2 going... Who know's, it's not like samsung give guides or tips or any info on there website.

Don't upgrade your Samsung Galaxy S [GT-I9000] firmware. I did it 3 days ago to the new 2.2 version [PDA-JPA / PHONE: JPP / CSC: JPS] [compilation Froyo.XWJPA] just to discover i had lost the SMS/MMS capability. Messages do not work in/out at all. Besides, the phone aparently goes slower on most functions.

I'm generally not a guy who posts on forums, but I couldn't bare this so I'm shouting out here!!

DO NOT GO FOR FROYO UPDATE FOR GALAXY S!!!

          IT S****!!!! ITS TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SLOW!!!!

I bought Galaxy S i9000 last week and it was pretty fast and cool, I loved it...

yester-night I upgraded my handset's OS to Froyo and suddenly the swype input mode in my set stops working!!!

in addition to that, a few applications stop working too...

and the worst part, my phone is now slower than a symbian or some old android (i guess android 1.6) handset, even when I'm not multi-tasking!!!!

Can anybody suggest me a method to get back to Android 2.1?

yes, Samsung really sucks! They don't give a s**t on the end user, do not even bother to answer to emails and questions...Not worth it! Galaxy S was the last Samsung product I will ever buy!

Checked for Froyo update here in the Philippines today. Still no luck:

                Model Name: GT-I9000
                Current Version: PDA:JF7 / PHONE:JF5 / CSC:SWC
This device's version cannot be updated

my SGS was 'original from Globe:

                productCode: GT-I9000HKAGLB

                SofwareRevision
                I9000XWJF7/I9000SWC/I9000XXJF5/I9000XWJF7

am tempted to update it via the XDA Developers instruction on their site but, i think i'll wait for a week or two.

Honestly they disappoint me. I've been using my galaxy s for a month now but I really bought it for the froyo experience. They promised in their samsung store in the philippines that this is updateable to froyo by october. I hope they would keep their promise. Otherwise I should have bought an htc.

Have all Galaxy S now the SUPERAMOLED SCREEN? I thought I once read Samsung is short of material ans atarted supplying in AMOLED instead.

Have all galaxy's in western Europa now out of the box 2.2 Froyo? If 2.1 it 's better to wait for the 2.2 version already installed(maybe 2.3)?

why does we have to find information about the froyo update. Why does not Samsung inform us. From Samsung it is quiet, very quiet. the last 4 years I have and had only Samsung mobiles. but when it comes to service Samsung is very quiet. I can wait for Froyo but Samsung tell us something it will come in December, pick a date Samsung. If you still want to keep your customers. Feedback from Samsung is bad, very bad. there is site samsungmobile.nl is a great site, but when you are waiting on an update who is very needed, than you will find nothing. now I stop I will wait when Samsung is ready with Froyo I hope before the year 2011 ....... greetings John

As a buyer of the original Galaxy (i7500 GT), I can only say one thing, if you value your hard earned money stay away from Samsung phones. Their software sucks big time. The way they implemented the Android 1.6 upgrade on the Galaxy i7500 GT literally crippled the phone. It crawls along and keeps on flashing Force Close messages. No doubt the hardware is impressive but an embedded system is not all about the hardware.

At times I begin to wonder about Samsung's capability to both launch and maintain any of their Android based mobile devices. It's certainly not a matter of technology as Samsung seems to resource their R&D adequately and have developed some cutting edge mobilee technologies. As is the case, it appears to this engineer a matter of insufficient Test Engineering resources.

Now granted Android hasn't the maturity of a long standing operating system and yet other OEM's apparently are able to launch and update their mobile networked devices with both regularity and stability.

Most every firmware and OS will contain some glitches and even the occasional flaw as this is part of project risk management. You set milstones and determine which functionaity goes forward and which doesn't. And yet you also resource your Test Engineering not merely adequately but superbly; otherwise you end up with poorly tested devices, firmware and operating systems. Despite the sheer volume of applications you are tasked with also testing as a quality assurance function of any project you must balance the time and resources appropriately so as to launch your product and/or upgrades within Test Engineering standards and with proper Infotech maturity levels (e.g CMMI).

From this engineer's vantage it seems, at times, both the OEM's as well as the MSP's (Mobile Services Providers, i.e carriers) are "skimping" on properly resourcing their Test Engineering functions. Whether it's a matter of too few engineers (if any), lower echelon payscales or merely deciding to "launch then fix" I cannot ascertain as this engineer isn't privy to such information.

What I do know is that the Galaxy S isn't the first product this OEM has launched nor upgraded (or failed to upgrade) with some oft serious glitches and/or flaws in hardware/firmware and the OS. Perhaps it's time for the OEM's to begin utilizing more Beta Testers from without the company if they cannot keep pace with the short turnaround times necessary with Android devices. I am sure the open development community would appreciate and willingly assist in developing more sound releases and upgrades provided the OEM's and MSP's would be willing to "loosen the lockdown" of their product offerings. After all that was part of the paradigm Google presented when first introducing the Android OS. If not then let those OEM's willing to do so produce Android phones and those OEM's not willing to use their proprietary OS'. JMHO

SE will never release an untested software like the douche bags samsung!
