Hell yeah!!! I have pretty much always tried to go for the smallest phone which has the best spec possible! Used to have Xperia mini pro, Xperia Z1 Compact and now have Xpereia Z5 Compact...and am excited to hear about the Xperia X Compact. Sony is the only company that is still catering for people in this market. We want a phone fast fluid phone but would like it to comfortably fit in any pocket and use with a single hand! There are plenty of reasons for wanting a powerful but not necessarily big phone, if watching videos and browsing the web isn't the main concern (actually even web pages are now designed to work for smaller screens):
* powerful still and video photography with photo editing capabilities
* power media playback especially for music
* maps and fitness tracking
* video calling / conferencing
* casting video to other screens

My hands do not work well with small phones, so no for me. I've had 3.5", 4", 4.7", 5" and now I'm using a 6" Nexus 6. The most comfortable to type is the 6-inch one, though my next phone will be bigger if there are any reasonable phones out with such a screen.

I have small hands so my 5s is perfect for me. I wouldn't want to carry around a fridge in my pocket.

I would. I'm not a big fan of phablets unless they have good ergonomics. The biggest I'll go for is a 5.2 inch screen. I have an S7 and I love the size of the phone.

I wouldn't, because now i'm looking for 5.7-6 display size.
but compact smartphones must exist, because in some cases, they are much better.
for example, travelling through latin america with note 4 is not a very good idea.
if the phone fully fits in your hand, this greatly decreases the chances of being robbed at knife or gun point.

Anonymous, 28 Aug 2016Heh, "compact", still much bigger than Nokia 3210 in profil... moreEither you are blind or else blind.
Apple is known to magically fit 4.7" screen where other OEMs easily fit 5" in similar or even smaller body footprint. And you are expecting Apple to be the Founding Father of a so called True Compact Smartphone.
Just for your information, I can almost easily use my Moto X Play (a 5.5" device) single handedly. So, it differs from person to person. A device may be too large for a person and perfect for another. So there's no true Compact device as you wrote about.
Yet, I have no right to dismiss your thoughts so kudos to them. But don't be blind in your faith.
I don't deny that Apple can make a compact device but it's not known to be a compact device maker lately.

my current device is the z5 compact and the only thing i'd like see changed in future models is the ram, 2gig is not enough, specially with sony's poor ram management, cant switch between three apps without one of them shutting down
screen res is perfect, just upgrade the ram

I thought 4.5'' phone was the best until I used a 5.5''. I don't think I would go back to anything smaller not even 5.2''.
Though it depends on the user. Typing, camera capture, picture editing and other screen centric activities are ideal on a bigger screen.

You are going to have to change the specs of the X Compact in "full phone specifications"

I don't care about size. Just give me timely security updates.
It's 2016, and outside of the Nexus line, only BlackBerry backports Android security updates on time. What a world we're living in.

My hands is so huge! Huge as donald trump's hands, same as other part of my body. :D So I think compact devices like 5" bellow is a BIG joke already!!! 5.7" is the perfect size for me and compact already at the same time by my point of view.

Xperia x10 mini was an ideal phone.but had to give up due to lack of further updates.
Samsung coined the idea of phablets. But I find it funny when people talk using huge slate over their ears ( though hands free available). Specially it looks horrible when people use calling tablets and make a call.
I have seen in India,phablet is considered a status symbol,specially if from Samsung.
Best compact smart phone from Samsung was Corby qwerty. I loved it and used it for my business purpose.

Hell yeah! Wait...at least I want the category to remain. Got my Z1C after release day+1 month, until Z5C release day+1month. Z1C was the 1st phone I did not look to replace after 6 months.
PS: but please solve the proximity sensor on calls from standby.

Compact got still its uses, and sony is the best in this field. You get the best for less price(cameras, endurance, processing power) and most of all, its very pocketable - what is the biggest problem of the best smartphones/flagships. I wish they also release more of mini,premium and ultra flagships.

Not only yes, but that's the only type of phone, Android or otherwise that I'm ever going to buy. Even most 5 inchers are too big for people with small hands like me. I'll never buy a phone that's 70mm wide or more(width is the most important in that regard). It's the overall size that matters not the screen size. If there's a 5.2 inch phone with a 78% screen to body ratio then I wouldn't mind that at all. But they never are. So I'm keeping hold of my trusty Galaxy Alpha for now. And if by the time I plan to replace it my only option for a fast, small phone will be the Iphone, then I'll have to jump ship to Apple for the first time. Nothing else to do if the Android manufacturers abandon people who can't or don't want to use big phones

I disagree the qualcomm 820 idea, although it is powerful but that more power is not needed, or it is just more power consumption, qualcomm 650 is the best choice, look at the difference between xperia x and xp.
