Curved screens are very impractical, and I'm willing to bet they're also more expensive. The glass around the edges is probably weaker and takes more money to do quality-control on.
The only up-side of them is appearance, but a much better effect (no bezel) can be achieved with 2.5D glass, where the screen doesn't even have to bend.

It's been a popcorn-worthy mode having these recent articles on upcoming S821 phones pop up. Honestly, how much of an upgrade is a puny 10% increase in power efficiency and processing power? If you've already bought an S820 (MSM8996 "lite" or MSM8996) device this year, good for you. If you haven't yet 'cause you either have the patience and the cash to wait and purchase an S821 (MSM8996 Pro) device or had second thoughts on upgrading to an S820, good for you, too. But let's be real for a moment here. It's nearly the fourth quarter of the year and who knows when a barrage of S830 device plans are teased by these companies by the end of the year or early next year? Whether leak articles transition from S821 to S830 is going to happen soon, I have no idea. If it so happens whenever it happens, the attention, as have been always, would then shift to the S830 as quick as a screw drilled to a coffin irregardless of whether its claimed or actual performance is better or worse. S821 could only be worth an upgrade from an S820 if S830's power and efficiency increase is under 10% from the S820 ('cause how is that higher than S821's 10% increase, right?). Doubting that would happen, I'm more realistically inclined to believe a 30-50% or possibly even higher increase on the S830. But I'd hold my breath. All because the transition from S800's, S801's, and S805's 28nm ARMv7 to S808's, and S810's 20nm ARMv8 weren't all full of praises after their respective device releases. A newer generation does not necessarily yield better results

Hate curved displays. Doesn't fulfill any functions for most customers. Me inclued. Personal preference of course. Give us a non-curved bezelless display. I hope some OEM releases a bezelless phone with great specs and price.
Then you'll have a great offering.

wow... now is the era of curved display
the bendgate era has changed to crackgate especially on curved section, so beautiful yet so fragile

i won't say that xiaomi copying samsung, it just seems like that because samsung has featured the curve glass on s6 first, and if you say xiaomi copying samsung, how about the back curve glass panel, xiaomi used it first on mi note 1 if you remember, than samsung released the note 5 with the same curve glass panel on its back

and as far as i see, is the curve just like s7e? not like the note one?

The points raised regarding 'copying' can be difficult to define; I suppose there's different variations of copying.

It does seem though that China has a reputation for copying; certainly in terms of concept.

In the case of the curved display:
Samsung did the R&D, tested the market with curved screen; it won over certain customers ... then the Chinese think, hey, lets use a curved screen too.

Really there's very few countries that are true innovators. In the technology sector the Germans probably lead the field followed closely by the Japanese, British, Americans ... after that I guess it thins out a bit.

Different countries & cultures lead in different fields; for the Chinese it's 'copying' in various forms ... for the French it's fine cuisine & striking ... for the Swedish it's weaponry ... the Dutch it's dam design & land reclamation ... the Israelis it's diamonds, Hollywood etc ... the list goes on.

Anyhow, we're all different ... makes life interesting ;)

Its funny how many people think its a "copy". Sure if you think of it all the phones look the same now... Samsung has a glass front and back with a metal band, does that mean its copied from iPhone 4. There are only limited ways a touch or a curved display can be implemented.
Next, you would be a fool if you think all the components of your phone (say samsung) is made by the company themselves. Pretty much any entity say automobiles, gadgets anything... companies buy stuff from others and use it..... so its not logical possible for every company to "invent" what they use.
If you feel so, then capacitive touch was first invented by Royal Radar Est. so does that mean now everyone is copying from them.

Why did they shrink the screen size... If you do that, at least make a mi max type phone with decent specs. I was hoping because china, and india are target markets they would go for the 5.7-6inch size. Now they are competing in an over crowded space directly against the s7 edge, vivo xplay5 elite, and Nexus Marlin.. For the price, there seems to be a bunch of better value positioned phones, and if you can afford premium, why not get an S7 edge or huawei p9 unless you are a miui diehard?

Nowadays smartphones design is all about copying one another and no progress. Nobody dare to go into the flexible mobile devices era, now we can only see flexible device prototypes by some makers, no guts to push it to the market, all waiting for Samsung to take the first step but it's been dragging for so long since 2013.
