      Conspiracy theory:

A competitor planted a mole inside Samsung factories. Sabotaged the batteries. Remember, Samsung have more employees than Apple, Google, and Microsoft combined. Any employee could be part of the other team and act like a spy. Like Stephen Elop (Microsoft trojan horse) ruining Nokia even further, there was a mole that sabotaged the Note7's chances to succeed.

Its clearly to do with altitude the less pressure on the cell the more likely it will internally short out through expansion, like placing a cell in a vacuum, someone should cycle a phone In a near vacuum to see if this is the case as none have exploded at sea level, all have been either in planes or in land 1000ft +

The real question is why does the Chinese variant not explode? I remember on the first recall those were deemed safe. Did that change?

The problem is some batch of batteries when manufactured are a bit bigger than the normal in size to fit in the slim glass case, a pressure was applied when sealing the smartphone. when slightly pressure applied on it when using, smartphone overheats. And when a little big force on it, it catches fire. This is a design issue plus wrong batch of batteries.

There's definitely something fishy about Note 7 self combustion... It happened mostly in the US and was heavily covered by media... And it couldn't be reproduced in the lab.. As if somebody give their best to make the phones burst to flames and then forced it into media for whole world to know.

The most advanced phone ever and it was sabotaged and destroyed by competitors because they couldn't make nearly as advanced phone, so they destroyed this one instead to make their phones look not so bad

The problem was not in the battery. Must be on the circuit board itself.
Samsung knew this but too costly to fix because it means full replacement.
They tried using cheapest method first, which is replacing the battery.

i think that they need rebranding of the "Galaxy Note":

                                8GB RAM LPDDR4x
                                128GB UFS 2.0
                                Android 7.X
                                waterproof
                                microUSB + USB Type-C Combo
                                6,000mAh Battery
                                2K Display 5.5-6inches

                                around the price of 500$
                                for all markets,

They have replaced the battery and use an entirely different manufacturer.
This is for sure not a battery problem. Something else is causing the battery overheat or explosion.

AnonD-597150, 13 Oct 2016I am the owner of Note 7 (replaced to the Green battery) , ... moreAre you really that ignorant? How they can explode in the warehouse, if they aren't turned on in the first place? The problem appears generally when the device is charging, but necessarily. What rich feature phone are you talking about? They rip off everything from other brands and present it at their own, their phones are the worst optimized out there, even 500$ cheaper phones are optimized better. One of my friends has an S6 edge and after 1 month of using it, the lag installs and feels like having a cheap phone. Samsung throws all the unnecessary features they can get into the phone so that the fanboys keep buying it, even though this hefty price tag isn't justified. You think that if you didn't have problems with it, this whole thing is a lie? That's why Samsung didn't even say a thing and stopped the production immediately?
I imagine when will Samsung and Apple start using the back power button already, it is high time they rip this too from LG, as Apple did with the dual camera on the back. I mean, my frustration comes from the fact that I'm sure an S7 Edge or a 7 isn't costing them more than 250$ for production, but they sell it for 1000$. Nice one, what more to say.
LG was the 3rd smartphone producer in the world for a long time, but only because they weren't and still aren't not even near in terms of marketing capabilities by comparison with these two. Their products are well above what Samsung can offer, and Apple doesn't even stand a comparison with an LG product, simply because they offer different things. One buys an Apple only to navigate the web, Facebook and this kind of stuff, and of course to brag about how nice it looks. As an Android user, everyone who knows what this means agrees that Apple represents only the power of marketing. Samsung has reached even a higher level of brainwashing their clients, as even now, when this mess happened, they are still defended by the fanboys.
As a conclusion, LG and the other manufacturers don't stand a chance of competing with these two, simply because their clients are brainwashed and don't recognize the true necessity and quality of smartphone brands. I am simply in love with the fact that when all my colleagues have their Sammy in their pocket, risking to burst in flames, and I have my LG V10 by my side, appreciating that I'm unique in this matter, having no problems which other Sammy and iPhon$ fanboys say it does, only because the hate is huge, they can't accept that someone can have a better phone than their small fortune priced device.
This feeling for me is like in the MasterCard commercial: PRICELESS!!!
