I'm still waiting for the Froyo update for my Samsung Captivate. It's being held by my carrier for more than a month now.

This is another advantage of Symbian over Android. Updates on Android is at the mercy of the manufacturers and carriers who may or may not update your phone.

Anonymous, 10 Dec 2010Exactly what can Symbian do that Android can not do? USB-on... more
Bear in mind that this is all **from my personal experience, and those of close friends only**. Of course with only limited time I've not used every 'droid extensively. Maybe SE and Samsung are being lazy with their PC software; maybe I just need to spend more time with the devices. And I'm sure there are handsets out there that do at least some of the things below. I have spent plenty of time with a few different handsets, so without further ado - things I've done using various versions of Symbian that I've not been able to do with the default software, on any Android handset that I've used:

                    1. Video calling that works properly. I'm talking about regular, 3G video calling of the kind I've been using since ~2006.
                    2. Easy and useful picture and video editing. I was surprised that my sister's Galaxy S couldn't crop a photo so I could send a more informative MMS.
                    3. Full and proper mass-storage mode, including access to main memory and memory cards. I'm very particular about organising my files, so I prefer to do it myself. Mass storage mode seems pretty flaky with the 'droids I've used.
                    4. Managed the files on the device itself with a proper built-in file manager, including copy, rename and move functions, and property inspection. Does Android even have one of these?
                    5. Easily find and install applications from a range of sources including experimental and older-version software found on the 'net. I couldn't see an easy way to do this with Android.
                    6. Backup phone contents to a file on my PC which can be "restored" to either a new or replacement handset. AFAIK Android has nothing like Nokia's PC Suite, instead insisting that people use Google's online services. On the subject of PC Suite ....
                    7. Receive, compose, save and send SMS and MMS from an interface on my PC, without having to be online.
                    8. Fully manage contact details, pictures etc. from an interface on my PC, without having to be online.
                    9. Fully manage calendar appointments, alarms, anniversaries etc. from an interface on my PC, without having to be online.

These are all functions I use (or wish to use) quite often - I'm sure there are some less-frequently-used functions I've missed out. But... yeah. AFAIK Android either fails completely or is inadequate in each of the above. I'd really like it to catch up, though, as the interface is still miles ahead of Symbian.

Anonymous, 09 Dec 2010OMFG now Nokia can watch YOUTUBE? iPhone can watch youtu... moreI know you're using hyperbole, but YouTube started in 2005, and iPhone first came out in 2007 - 10 years is a bit of a long bow to draw. In 2008 I racked up a huge bill (thanks to a misunderstanding with Vodafone - got it fixed up) watching YouTube videos on my N95 8GB through the standard Symbian browser. Worked great, so long as the connection was strong. There was a YouTube specific application for N95 at the time, but I preferred the browser.

This news article is about the *update* to the YouTube application for S^3, which looks a great deal like the application I've used to watch YouTube on my N97 Mini for months now.

Get over yourself. All devices are a matter of horses-for-courses, and it is a simple fact that out of the box S60 and Sym^3 have greater functionality (ie, a user can do more) than any other mobile OS.
