Aaron, 19 Jan 2011Are you serious people? Are you gonna pay a huge amount of ... moreCorrect. It's all about the complete package and not just the processor or just the screen or just the OS. The 600 euro is a pretty high price point. I will always compare the Nokia E7 with the HTC Desire Z because they were officially announced the same week. I ended up buying the Desire Z for $500 CDN. (I upgraded from the N97.)

OS-wise, there are features of each that I like. I find Android/HTC Sense (OS/UI) to be easier to use than Symbian. The UI is just more flexible and easier to modify.

Creating a home screen shortcut on Android is just a matter of selecting the shortcut to the app. Moving shortcuts around is also easy. With Symbian, you have to actually create a shortcut widget and then on one of the 4 shortcuts, select the app. If you wanted to move the shortcut to the right, you have to delete the old one and add the new one. You cannot just long tap on it and drag it over.

Widgets are more flexible on Android. The size of the widget can be any rectangle that is 1x1 units to 4x4 units. One unit is the space that a shortcut takes on a home screen. With Symbian, you get one size only for all widgets. Symbian does have an interesting feature where in landscape mode, the six widgets are displayed 2 across by 3 down. In portrait they are 1 across and 6 down. It's interesting, but not exactly useful. Android is 4x4 in both portrait and landscape. In landscape, the widgets are in the same orientation, but some may need to be scaled down in size to fit.

The one thing that Symbian is better is that you get more control over how applications work. With Android, it is designed to use WiFi first and then your carrier second. I haven't been able to change this on Android. This is probably how most people want to use it. With Symbian, you can control whether the order or WiFi only or carrier only, etc. You can also control this down to the application level. You may want some apps to use WiFi only or carrier only. You have to know what you're doing.

At least for me, I prefer the Android UI. The extra control I needed only on one instance and was able to find a good workaround anyway. For my day to day use, Android is just easier and yes it looks prettier as well.

I'm not entirely convinced that Symbian has a huge advantage in battery life over Android. There are many factors that affect battery life such as how you use it, what you use it for, the type of display, etc. In my experience with the N97 (which has a bigger battery) and the Desire Z, the batter life seems similar. I have to charge both phones every day and occasionally have to charge it before the end of the day.

"Desire Z is a much better choice!"

Since the E7 is aimed at businessmen who need a phone to last all day or longer it clearly isn't.

Nagol, 19 Jan 2011Finally somebody understands, Android is way overrated and ... moreIf you turn of all widgets... and force your Android down to the level of what Symbian 3 can do, almost nothing, then you will get even better batterylife on your Android than on any Symbian 3 Nokia.
It is no problem to waste no battery when the phone does/can not do anything!

Who cares about all that fancy apps and UI when your battery life can barely last a day. As much bashing that Nokia gets on here its beyond sickening, at least you know that you're gonna get stable battery life.

considering today's spec/number-driven market, this is a HUGE gamble on Nokia's side. Although the E7 is a looker, their marketing sure is messed up(unless they gna release the E7 in limited numbers. And I hope this, in no way, affects the N9 and its planned release date(which I sure hope is April)

Symbian with 660 Mhz procs is slower than ALL new 1 GHz(50% faster) procs Androids who have to deal with AT LEAST 66,67% more pixels on the screen. See GLBenchmark for example.

Aaron, 19 Jan 2011Symbian is more functional, resourceful and power efficient... moreAndroid iOS and Symbian are very similar(all based on Linux). The kernel is not very different between them. There is nothing one can do in terms of softaware the others couldn't. The difference is made by the hardware and available apps(except 10.1 Flash who's not allowed on iOS, and cannot be runned by Symbian hardware(low proce speed, low ram)). Add to that the lowest screen resolution and apps availability and I would say Symbian is behind iOS and Android.
