LG unveils 5.7" QHD+ display with 18:9 ratio, likely to debut on G6

10 January 2017
The QHD+ module is slim, too, as LG says it's less than 1mm thick.

For years LG has not done much to develop or improve on it's LCD displays on smartphones, glad to finally see some changes to the usual old screens & when are they gonna bump up from 16MP camera sensors?

Anonymous, 10 Jan 2017The second name of AMOLED is burn-in.Burn ins? Dude, this is 2016, it would take many years worth of use before you'd start to see any signs of burn in

18:9? What kind of a shitty aspect ratio is that? And why so large? I was interested in the G6 from what LG has done with the G5 and V20, but now I'm hoping they don't have any stupid plans...

If that is true then I don't know what kind of losers are in the decision making positions at this company, I can't believe that LG literally needs to be spoon fed of what's wrong with its devices. LG you did wrong by moving to QHD in G3 FHD was just fine as QHD is a waste of resources RAM and battery while the human eye can't notice the difference. LG you did wrong with G5 by creating a phone with smaller screen than G4 and smaller battery with same or bigger size. LG if you make G6 same display size as V20 than please tell us what's the difference ??? stop this crap, create a 5.5" phone with FHD resolution and scrap this 18:9 resolution that will only make things look awkward. Otherwise RIP LG phone department

People just encourage manufacturers to remove features add gimmicks and build disposable phones every year, sigh. First removable battery, then headphone jack and now with amoled. The battery benefits of amoled can't make up for the yellow tint, deterioration and risks of burn in.

If used on the G6, this could actually be an indicator that the G6 has very narrow top and bottom bezels, and a fingerprint scanner under the screen (LG announced such an under-glass fingerprint scanner a while ago). Very narrow top and bottom bezels is the only way to fit a 18:9 screen on a smartphone and not make it look awkward.

Anonymous, 10 Jan 2017Nonsense comment. LCD is much better than AMOLED.That is why iPhone pro would be amoled, that is why LG's oled TV line is regarded top amongst cinephile people. I'm sure you know better than Apple and cinephiles and DisplayMate calling it a mature technology with the the best possible color rendition... Ignore that noise man, just buy LCD like it's 2005 :p

That's a terrible aspect ratio. I much prefer a smaller screen than one with an awkward aspect ratio. In videos you get a black bar, in portrait 16:9 is already tall enough, so by adding an extra 2:9 you make it extremely tall and the upper screen gets even harder to reach one handed.

Liked how in G5 you could reach most of the phone with a middle grip. Now it would be almost impossible especially with the bigger screen.

I doubt the extra 0.4 would mean much in the long run, especially as part of it would come in the form of extra "tallness".

So combine the two facts (loss of one handed ness and loss of removable batt) and LG 6 more and more looks like the poor sibling of the bigger brands.

I bought G5 because it did the right things in a unique way. Not having to be a wall hugger, not having to use it two handed at all times, despite maintaining most of the rest of the good things from other flagships (incredible camera, incredible screen, top of the line SoC and RAM).

It still looked ugly (solved with a case) so they had to solve this. If rumours are good to go by they did solve the looks ... By killing one handedness and removable battery. What a pity, having a slam dunk of a phone in need of only a few tweaks and turning it into a pumpkin... That is basically what LG does for years, for every one thing it fixes it creates two problems more ... No wonder it's been killed in sales. Just find your identity LG and work on it instead of constantly blindly redesigning ....

I'm kinda concerned about these taller displays. Reaching the top of the screen and the bottom without moving your grip could be an issue like it is now with many smaller displays with buttons below the screen. I just want an ergonomic one handed phone...

From 5.5" displays with high screen to body ratios to 5.3" displays with small screen to body ratios to 5.7" displays with high screen to body ratios but still much bigger than the 5.5" models?

LG's smartphone division executives cannot be this incompetent... could they?

Well I see here we have smart peoples. And talking seriously about screens technology knowledge. So I want join in IP LCD vs SuperAmoled. First whats is principal both technology difference. LCD is made of crystal material screen. Amoled is made of diodes. LCD technology screen is more expensive to create, colors is less impressive, It needs more battery power to work and have less contrast ratio, because it didn't have true black color. Amoled diodes technology is cheaper techology to create, it needs less phone power energy to screen work, have high great contrast ratio because true black's , impressive color saturation. So you think why LCD is still now here and it have pluses. Yes it have. First now creating LCD panels have standart RGB 3 pixels per pixel panel (Red Green blue). QHD LCD haves more pixels per pixel then QHD Amoled Pentile panel have 2 pixels per pixel (Red and Blue) and other pixel have complikated greens. It costs colors reproduction quality, you wont have true geen color, thats means property white color calibration. Becauce amoleds wont have normall big property greens pixels, and curently position. If you wont have proprertly green color and white color, thats means you will have cold color point sceens. Pictures didin't look propertly colors, greens looks bads, and white also. When you have bad cold white, its bad for reading. you get earlier eye strain, and pain, you need stop reading, also at night because cold white you hard to sleep at night and maybe have insomia. So bluish cold white have serious problem. That's why Apple announced Night Shift function, yes iPhone have LCD but it have also but less it problem. And it solving with Night Shift. Androids with Amoleds also announced Blue filter function. So yes bluish cold white problems solved. But if you say normaly you wont see pixel dencity difference at it's high's density QHD LCD and QHD Amoled, yes large difference pixel density you wont see, but you feel, what means feel? When you see text's at QHD Amoled and have Pentile 2 sub pixels per pixel, here switches brains trick, your brain need imitate missing pixel because you see only 2pixels, brain need parallax missing pixel and see whole view, because your eys and brain coding RGB colors information, thats not problam, because you see content, but your brains need parallax and stick view whole time and imagine missing pixel, thats cause faster eyes strain, and you see that you can't propertly strongly focus your stare at amoled screen text, like on LCD. Also Amoled wont have equal brightness on whole screen in pixel level. This also cause faster eyes stain and pain when reading. Also because pallax you have bad sceen viewing angle. So Amoled is bad for longer text reading, and have faster eyes strain and pain. So LCD Is healtier technology and easier for your eyes when you reading text, spending time at night, looking photos and films, videos. AMOLED will rid of all these problems if Amoled change its Pentile panel technology to stantart RGB 3 sub pixel per pixel normal standart, like it all standart RGB LCD has. And Samasung earlies is promises to change next amoled screen to RGB 3 sub pixel per pixel standart. Well but greens pixel will need have normal size pixel and normal position like all other pixels have ( Red, Blue). I didin't know why Amoleds gave smalls greens pixels and not normal green pixel position pixels such long time. Maybe its Amoled technology disadvantage or specific. Maye greens pixels is fastest burning. Or maybe greens pixels need more battery consumtion, and that specific choose for battery power saving. But if Samsung promoses change amoled technology, means it's problems can solve and change Amoled manufacturing panel technology. So when when Samsung refuse Pentile panel technology, I think Amoled it will be best display technology for all. For now - didin't.

                                      1. AMOLEDs are still having ugly yellowish tint on whites. I've seen my teacher using Facebook on her S7 Edge and whites are ugly as hell, like seriously, I thought it wasn't even white at all
                                      2. S7 Edge color rendering was one of the poorest on smartphones, based on how it looks in real life. YouTube Red turns orange, and it wasn't technically solved at all
                                      3. They have infinite contrast ratio, but LCDs can go almost as dark as AMOLEDs, which makes it pointless to get an AMOLED when you can get the same for LCD at a cheaper price
                                      4. Power efficient with the unimpressive display quality. LCDs have higher resolution because they have 2 sub-pixels while AMOLEDs only have 1. For a QHD display, the S7 Edge sucks for easily showing its pixels within the human eye range. Even my sister's G4 is a lot sharper than the S7 Edge

But we can all agree to have CLEDIS on our smartphones, a combination of the strengths of AMOLEDs and LCDs and also removing their drawbacks
