Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus dimensions show compact phones with huge screens

16 January 2017
The Galaxy S8 should be about the size of the current S7 but with a screen bigger than the S7 edge.

john1102, 16 Jan 2017iphone 7plus is 77.9 wide and only has 5.5 inch screen... And yet it looks like a jumbo jet. It's size is very distracting. So dissapointing that Samsung adopted that size too.

They were going in the right direction managing to almost touch 70mm with S7 edge... and now this ... going back to stone ages. So sad :/

I know PPI is not everything, but right now is below the "retina" threshold (you can identify pixels pretty well), so it's -still- very fake looking ... I won't be buying this.

1440p is not fit for VR, 4k or UHD should be minimum requirement...

[deleted post]No, VR is not all about ppi, it is also important to increase the display subpixel count.

For example, the Galaxy S8 is rumored to go back to a QHD RGB Amoled display which have 50% more pixels than normal QHD Amoled display, resulting in more sharpness and even better picture quality.

You can read all about it here.

The only regular 17:9 resolution (one that is used by the industry) is 4096x2160 (true 4k). If they were to use 17:9 it would imply also upgrading the panel to 4K (because it's the only regular resolution they could use, else it would look ugly like MiMix).

Since they're using 16:9 means they're sticking with 1440p, no way are they going to 4k (3840x2160) ... that much is sure now.

Long story short, with 17:9 they would be forced to use 4K (for future compatibility, with media especially), with 16:9 they have an array of choices and sure as heck are not going to use 4k now that they have the rest of the choices (because Samsung doesn't care to live at the edge anymore, remember the first 1440p phone? That's 2.5 years ago)

Did you think they can afford cramming an iris scanner, bigger battery, and other tech inside a phone that is smaller than the S7 edge? Think before you talk

I love it, since I loved the Xiaomi Mi Mix design and was excited to see Samsung's response.
I'm not a fan of curved screens, but can understand the necessity to prevent the phone from getting too wide. I just hope they move to USB type C, seriously it would be stupid to keep Micro USB. Hope it's a mistake in the diagram.

WOW! The Galaxy S8 Plus with 6.3 inch display will be almost the same size as the iPhone 7 Plus with 5.5 inch display.

AnonD-633729, 16 Jan 2017You must have 3 year old's hands. He's right, 130x65 is the threshold for one-handed use. They could make a phone as small if they were to use 5.2 inch screens ... but Samsung doesn't care.

Most people are not above 6 feet in height. More than half of the population are women in fact who most of all are less than 180 cm, so their hands are far smaller too. Add to that population who are smaller than average (half of men's population) so indeed 3/4th of the global population would benefit from a 130x65mm phone.

But like I said Samsung doesn't care. They want the biggest screen possible because it looks cooler... they never said that they want to bring one-handed use back.

AnonD-442781, 16 Jan 2017You're wrong. The on screen buttons don't have to always be... more17:9 also makes the screen narrower which IMO is what is most important from his point.
17:9 would make the phone to be as narrow as 74mm, 78mm is iPhone Plus's territory which is a behemoth of a phone.

I don't agree with the rest, but that part I agree with him.

This looks hideous. This phone looks like a phone that has suddenly lost it's character all of a sudden. So we can call it a characterless phone. Note 7 was much better looking than this weird looking phone.

Still holding out for future 5" or 5.2" phones with at least 80% screen-to-body ratio, upper midrange chipset, and maybe ip certification.
