Well, I think both IOS and Android became so popular simply because majority doesn't like Symbian. I have had with several Symbian phones in my life and none of them impressed me. Actually I got rid of them as soon as I could. Leaving the GUI & application availability aside, which is a personal preference imho, there are some deeper problems with that OS and I'll try to sum. them below:

1. Closed system.

- Yes, it is. No matter that Samsung & SonyEricsson were having such phones, parts of the OS were simply not available there (the famous voip stack, camera intf, etc.).

- Nokia OVI suite... Don't want to start how many bugs and nonsense I've experienced with that piece of SW.

2. Software mgmt (this is quite long I'm afraid)

-filesystem feels like DOS (E, F, S, etc. partitions) need to be somehow transparent to the user, or at least labeled correctly. You never know what parts of the SW is where and why.

- Hard for troubleshooting.

- Installation of SW is...I don't even want to start on that. Signing apps in Chinese sites, paying 30+ euro for the most simple stuff... Apple was supposed to be the bad guy after all.

- Software updates and backup restore are very painful procedures.

3. Network management
Totally wrong and broken.

- each app manages and maintains the network connection by itself (at least 4 places to configure that) including settings for that, opening and closing it.

- no handover between wifi & cell network (I know about 3rd party software , but they have severe limitations and cost a lot)

- usability is awful (lots of confirmations needed, roaming charges, etc.)

- Mail for exchange & broken IMAP support (even Nokia support doesn't know how to configure it)

- unreliable.

4. GPS/Navigation
Very bad implementation. Again separate network settings; slow fix. Partly online, despite offline maps.

5. Limitations...This a very long list
-1x calendar sync only,
-mail for exchange/IMAP
-lack of proper codecs support
-...

6. GUI
Here is not too much to say
- properties of properties of options of settings...And that per application. Nightmare.
-SMS, test input fields, screen keyboard, etc.

In conclusion, some of those issues are also valid for ios, some for android, and some perhaps for both. But as I said in the beginning - the fact that people don't like Symbian (and WM6) is what gave birth to IOS and Android.

Symbian is made for true smartphone and multitasking experience and android is a shit in multitasking even we cant even close and cant open more than 6 apps in background (Android 2.1 tested)... it needs 3rd party apps to do it..Well i think nokia is busy in developing MeeGo and i think if MeeGo is given for touchscreen phones and symbian is given for nontouchscreen phones it would be a great for nokia....

                      WHY N8? here my ans:::
For Rs.23k in India (500$), what more we need! Best value for money. Reliable Nokia brand, whatever west says...in east we need most features for the best price!
                      > Of course for camera. (no need to carry a separate camera on my trips!)...its worth a 12k-15k (300$) camera!
                      > Features like no-smart phones have; HDMI out, USB otg, FM transmitter, Free maps with free navigation!, solid build quality.
                      > All essential smart-phone's features. (any feature that we can pick from other smartphone!)
                      > We can experience true HD games on HDTV!
                      > Complaints and facts:
                      >> About UI, i choose features/quality/support against UI ! But a major fw update coming in March to fix these...can wait!
                      >> Then Apps, how many quality apps we have in andriod!? All good apps from iOS already there on Ovi... And again we dont install million apps on our mobile! :P
Finally, Symbian is not older than Windows/Linux and experienced than iOS/Android! Yes its getting revamped, once split-screen input, fast browser, fresh interface arrives, it will be no-match to any competitor! :-)

Anonymous, 08 Feb 2011nah so you never use N8 right? try it first then make post ... moreNope, the masses and reviews all over the web disagrees. No amount of optimization will make up for raw processing power. Have you tried comparing the speed at which the N8 with Opera compared to a top end Android? The N8 won't win that race.

If you work for Nokia then you deserved to get fired. People like you who works up there and keeps saying that there's nothing wrong are the reason why Nokia is on a decline.

@Mista Calais: Android is a nice OS but there are still some major kinks that needs work. The battery life is still appaling and updates are inconsistent. You'll never even know if you'll get the update or not. Android's weakness lies on the OEMs who would rather sell you an updated version rather provide you support and updates.

Nokia should show strenght whereareas Android is weak. Give us MeeGo with a great UI that's easy to use and it will bring Nokia back on top. Just one iteration of MeeGo and Nokia should show that they fully support it and it will attract those who felt let down by the Android OEMs. Nokia should capitalize on that.

I'm sorry for offending Nokia's fans but we need to show some tough love for this company nowadays.

It's still early and it's still anybody's ballgame.

I have an N900 and Nexus One, and I held off on the N8 to replace the Nexus regardless of it being the best camera phone because I knew that Maemo was gonna go somewhere. That OS has more power than ^3, and I am a lover of computer/superphones. So I'm waiting on the MeeGo N9 to replace the N900. Hope they don't disappoint.

I ditched my E71 for HTC Magic, at first I was amazed for few weeks and was really happy with it, but then it started lagging and slowing down, and had too many limitation, The customization is nice I have to admit, but the OS is not stable and there was too many "Force Close" issues. Could be that particular phone, But it had a 600mhz CPU and 199mb RAM which were too much over a year and a half ago (I was disappointed). So I went back to my old E71 with the hardware qwerty that never fails me, and the Free lifetime GPS Which I use ALOT (due to my short term memory LOL).

I was expecting Symbian ^3 to be a lil bit more Eye candy, but I'm really happy with it, it's not too complicated for new users, and pretty easy to use, I guess that's what Nokia had in mind when they decided to keep it relatively similar to Symbian ^1 (which was a major fail).

Once again I'm really looking forward to Meego as I was in love with maemo and the N900 which I was going to buy out right, but decided to wait and see what Nokia has up it's sleeves.

Let's see what they will have to show off at MWC, They have to act quick as the competition is catching up (VERY QUICKLY). They have only released 3-4 phones since November last year. Something is wrong or they have something major to show? I dunno but I hope to God that it's Good.
