Anonymous, 28 Jan 2017The non-plus version leaks really are underwhelming so far,... moreThe screen by far is what uses the most battery on phones, not the SoC. The minimal gains in battery from 10nm would be greatly outstripped by having a hulking screen (27% bigger!) with more pixels lighting up "breathing down your neck".
At this point I have no doubt that this phone would feel less snappy (due to less user available ram -4GB on a more ram hungry system is *actually* having less ram), and last less (due the above paragraph). Also the fingertip sensor going in the back would be a solid downgrade for many people.
They go the "looks over substance" route and I don't like it at all.
I was the first to welcome the shaving off of bezels, but it should have been coupled with other changes. They mostly sat on their a$$ and merely changed the design as it turns out.
It would cost them very little to add more ram (a couple of bucks) and more battery (a few mm in thickness), but they decided they want none of those. I honestly hope consumers won't prefer them this year 'round...

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2017How does putting mid range specs (RAM and battery) on flags... moreThe non-plus version leaks really are underwhelming so far, 3000 mAh battery with 4GB of RAM is not what I expect from Samsung. Even the Plus version will have a 3500 mAh battery, which is a DOWNGRADE from the S7 Edge battery, which was 3600 mAh. But then again, these sacrifices are made for something, and the 10 nanometer architecture processor will be 20% more energy-efficient, meaning the battery life will still increase. There has to be a reason for the lower end specs, and if they DOWNGRADE the battery capacity, there has to be something else that they will hugely improve. Samsung knows what's for its own good, and trust me, they are using all the cards they have now, after the Note 7 disaster

This looks like a pebble-stone again. I hate that round design, samsung uses on its Galaxy-S-Series. I want sharper edges and please ban the edge-display. It is useless and looks like shit!

AnonD-196068, 28 Jan 2017I take your points but given the S8 plus comes with exactly... moreYeah I have the S6 and coming from the S4 the battery life was similar, and that is considering similar screen size and more efficient process on the chipset. I think with this generation of new phones with tinier bezels the battery lives are going to suffer in general, especially if you're coming from the Note 4. It sucks that the battery tech is not moving forward fast enough to catch up with what needs to be powered. I hope Samsung went into some sort of damage control and yeah I'd be surprised if they don't end up using bigger batteries. On another hand It might be a bad coincidence resulting in playing it safe considering the Note 7 issues. I hope they will not make a silly decision though and do put bigger batteries in those phones. I am not happy enough with the S6 battery and I would not want a new phone with the same or worse screen on time. To be fair, the biggest drain is related to the processor-heavy tasks.

I have the galaxy s7.. and its phenomenal.. I am not a fan of large screen phones 5.5 inch and above cause it makes it difficult to handle.. but this s8 with a size of 5.7 with almost no change in dimensions compared to the s7 sounds awesome.. although ill miss the front button and I hope the position of the fingerprint scanner isn't a pain..

I'm all for making phones simpler, but don't do it while harming battery life and speed in every day tasks. You can do both, why not do both instead of opting for milking customers more?
Being a year behind many of your competitors does not work very well in the long run, even Apple has started losing sales by doing that...

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2017Comparing an early-2016 flagship with a slower processor du... moreProblem with the S7 being earlier argument is that we were told over and over again the later processors would show no tangible improvement and that we didn't need more RAM. So the their should have been no tangible difference. The video clearly demonstrates the S7 Edge is not as great as all the hype it gets. I also don't see the S8 being that much better. I would say let's wait for the next Note but I'm afraid I have now totally lost faith in Samsung. I see the next Note just being a rehash of the S8 models now and that is hardly something to get excited about in 6 to 8 months time.

It was one of the slowes... moreComparing an early-2016 flagship with a slower processor due to being released earlier to 2 late-2016 flagships with newer processors, nice. And I completely get why it can look like they are getting lazy, their way of thinking is changing more and more to "press 1 button and it works", instead of "push 8 buttons and pull 2 levers and it will work most of the time". This makes the whole operating system really simple, and you don't have a lot of control over anything, but it appeals to the general buyer who isn't a control maniac, and who enjoys everything always working. And they are not lazy on updates, TouchWiz is the heaviest Android skin that exists (not visually, but under the hood, Android has been redesigned majorly), and it took them half a year to build TouchWiz on top of 7.0 Nougat. They started in August and are now 6 months later done, it's a huge process due to the amount of changes they do to Android (they even use their own developed type of file for boot animations, not a zip file like normal Android does)

What makes you think that they will pull it off this year 'round?
Ever since they became as big as Apple, they started adopting Apple practices too. Lazy on upgrades, rarely beating the competition in a bunch of stuff, overpriced. Old Sammy is dead, I have no confidence in this company. S8 would be another money grab. S4 was the last flagship worthy of its name (top in everything). Note 4 too (as far as Notes go).

Nope, not official. The person who originally posted this picture on Twitter (VenyaGeskin1) is known for creating his own renders, and first did the render shown in this article (with silver front bezels), then tweeted saying that all the models will have black front bezels, and then did an another render with the front color changed to black. Looking at it right now, the fingerprint scanner position and only 4GB of RAM (on a flagship that will serve them a whole year VS competitors already having 6GB half a year ago, are you f***ing kidding me??) are looking bad for Samsung, but I'm confident that they will pull it off. They always have in the past, and the optimized software will make up for a lot here

A true step backwards.
Awkward fingertip placement... same amount of ram despite the greater ram needs, only 10% faster despite the greater cpu needs, less battery for the screen size... Heck , same camera despite S7's already being surpassed or caught up by other makers.
What is there to like about this phone?
Samsung phones used to come loaded ... this one seems old even by the time of its release. At this point cutting costs all the while upping prices seems more important to Samsung.
I honestly hope this phone would be bought by fanboys alone because it does not deserve a second look from anyone else.

Simon, 28 Jan 2017I was afraid they'all go the safe route after the Note 7 fi... moreI take your points but given the S8 plus comes with exactly the same size baťtery as the Note 7, rather than the S7 Edge, I cannot help but be a bit suspicious quite honestly. My real concern is that a friend of mine upgraded from S3 mini to the S6 and almost immediately noticed the battery life difference. I have a Note 4 and am worried I will see the same if I upgrade to the S8 plus. We heard all this about more efficiency with the S6 and Note 5 so the smaller batteries were not a problem. The reality was different.
